Today's Tarot - Queen of Swords

When you work with intuition, you run the risk of startling yourself every now and again. It is just part of the territory, and kind of the point....some ideas need to grab our attention.

As I am writing this the TV is on in the background. I just didn't bother to change the channel after the morning news, and they are re-playing the whole news broadcast from 2001.

I picked up the cards for today's post...I had no intention of touching on 9-11, which has been remembered to the point of exploitation over the past decade...but when I cut the deck to shuffle, the Tower card was in my hand. It's hard to believe that is random coincidence. We commemorate the day because it was a watershed moment in history, a profound point of energy that echoes still today.

I remembered my fear that day: home with a baby, a husband working in a downtown high rise, watching the live news from New York ... and the report that another plane was down south of Pittsburgh. The distance was initially mis-reported as being closer than then it actually was. Living in the southern 'burbs, I literally looked out the windows expecting to see a smoke plume somewhere within sight.

That was 11 years ago. The loss may never heal for those who lost loved ones that day. The grip the events still have on people who were not directly affected, except in the abstract, national sense, surprises me sometimes. Violence is a global heartbreak, no matter what country, what day or what motivation causes it. At some point, all the focus on "9-11" starts to feel like wallowing in self-pity, when other places have lost as much.

Which is exactly why commemoration is still needed...the chill from seeing the Tower card in my hand at the same moment of the news re-play was a reminder of that. We still have much to learn from the retrospective. It is a chance to see the facts, see the mistakes, see how the tragedy has been magnified by the further tragedy of ten years of war. The loss of life that day has been multiplied many times over by war - some defensive, some unnecessary, all too long-lasting.

It also lets us see where we are stuck, where fear has become paralyzing and unhealthy, but also where we have courage and where we are strong.

We could just sit here and be freaked by the Tower card turning up like that, or we can go on to shuffle, and see what we need to know NOW, HERE, TODAY.

That is when the Queen of Swords comes along. The meaning of "mystical power" from Diane Morgan's book seems the strongest one. There is mystical power available to each and every one of us...intent, attraction, action...and choice.

We see now how the events of 9-11 and the choices of 2001 have affected us today. Today, we have the ability to choose our path for the next 11 years. We can choose war, pain, fear (as the suite of swords reminds us) ...or we can choose wisdom, courage, cooperative action (as the nature of a queen reminds us).

A queen is a leader, with the feminine touch of intuition and nurturing. Today she is asking us to remember - to understand those in pain and grief, but also to remember the power we have, the magic we hold over the future through the choices we make today.

Today's Tarot - Knight of Coins

Don't let your expectations cloud your perception. Sometimes things are not what they seem, sometimes they are exactly what they seem to be. Intuition can be a big help in telling the difference.

Q&A: DIY

Q. Are those do it yourself online computer tarot readings valid?

A. It depends on what you mean by "valid". The answer could be yes or no, depending on how you look at readings in general.

If by "valid" you mean "accurate predictions", then the answer is no. The computer readings can't read minds, tell what is in someone else's heart, or predict what others will choose or what will happen any better than a human reader can.

When you get right down to it, tarot cards are just a tool. The important thing isn't those little pieces of cardboard with the pretty pictures...the important thing is the spirit of the person looking at them. Whether that person is you...or someone else looking on your behalf...tarot cards, palm lines, tea leaves, rune stones or what-have-you are all just tools...a spring-board that helps us access the intuition within. That intuition, in turn, is guidance, not predictions. Long story short: Tarot cards, no matter whether they are paper or electronic, are just a way to help us solve problems and make better choices. Those choices in turn create a better future, rather than predict some imposed fate outside of ourselves.

In that way of looking at things, then yes, electronic tarot "DIY" readings are just as valid as if you drew physical cards for yourself. Either way, paper or virtual, the cards are just a spark to help you access your own inner wisdom, understanding and intuition.

Make sense?

Thoughts from the Wheelhouse

I'm hooked on a fishing show.

Never thought I'd say THAT. I don't fish. It makes me woozy to ride the "lazy river" at the water park. Don't get me wrong, I love to eat the crab the guys on TV catch, but never thought I'd want to watch the process of catching it in the first place.

What does that have to do with intuition, tarot readings or the mind-body-spirit connection in dieting? It is a round-about connection, but we'll get there. Like almost everything in "The Vampire Diet" and "Modern Oracle Tarot" blogs, it is all about choice and taking charge of our own life.

It's no secret that I loves me some Mythbusters. I watch Discovery Channel and Science Channel all the time. Not long ago I saw an ad for their series "Deadliest Catch" where there was an ill crew member. He had "the look".  It caught my attention and the part of me that spent 13 years in medicine like a grappling hook. Whatever was going on was real, and it was bad. That guy would have looked scary enough rolling into a well equipped emergency room. Can you imagine dealing with that situation in the middle of freezing water nowhere with nothing but a blood pressure cuff, a bottle of sports drink and a radio? Yikes! My hat, were I wearing one, is totally off to Captain Keith and the "Wizard" crew.

Now throw that little bit of light viewing in the mental stew-pot along with Marcus Bach's excellent "Secrets of a Buccaneer Scholar", Gina Mazza's "Everything Matters, Nothing Matters", the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies, and every other poetic captain-ship-ocean metaphor you've ever heard. The universe is trying to tell us something. These are powerful images and analogies for a reason.

Living life well is a solitary achievement.

We are each captain of our own ship. At the same time, we are deeply connected to the all-that-is just like a ship is connected to water. We can't disconnect from the one-ness of our existence any more than a ship can float up in the air levitate over waves.

Our ship-of-self is part of a fleet. We command alone, but do not sail alone. You might not see yourself as captain of the ship, but, in a sense, you are. Think of the crew members on the crab boats...they aren't in charge of the actual ship, but they have the command call of how they conduct themselves. Each of them decides how they navigate their own personal 'ship' within the 'fleet' of the crew. They choose how to act, how to do their job. And they see results of those choices - fast - in their share of the profits and if they come back next season or not.

We are all captains in that sense. You can choose to sail alone, unconnected, but that seems to make an already risky business even riskier.

We reach out to connect for guidance. The Captains have GPS, maps, and training to guide them, just like we can reach out to intuition and spirituality to guide us, but in the end, we call the shots. We can read diet books and recipes all we want, but in the end we decide what we buy, chew and swallow.  We can communicate and connect with other "captains" while we are in command our own ship. We get whatever information we can, yet we  still move with the waves and tides of our existence. Whether we roll with it, plow through it, or get rolled by it is our own decision straight from the captain's wheelhouse.

Or at least, that's how it seems to me.

Today's Tarot - 7 of Swords

Have you ever seen any of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies? If you have, remember Captain Jack's compass? The one that didn't point north...it pointed the way to his heart's desire, even if he wasn't fully aware of what that really was.

There are moments when we feel like that compass looks...spinning in all directions not sure what to do next.  Our usual 'compass' just doesn't work. Religion, psychics, tarot cards...nothing seems to help or just can't give the answer we feel like we disparately need.

Which can mean a couple of things....

Maybe we are asking the wrong question. Maybe we are hanging our happiness on the wrong piece of information.

If you asked Jack Sparrow's compass "which way is north?" you'd get no help whatsoever. If you asked the compass WHAT IS your heart's desire...nothing. Ask it WHERE is your heart's desire...viola! A very precise answer is in your hands.

Psychics and Tarot work a little like Jack Sparrows compass. It can help...it can give you very valuable guidance, but only if you are able to understand the limitations and strengths its guidance can give.

Asking what another person is thinking, or feeling or what they will do is like asking the movie compass which way is north...it just can't give that information, even though it has been made to look like something that can. Jack's compass was made to look like something that could show you which way is north, but it can't. Movies, tv, wishful thinking and fiction has given us the popular notion that psychics and tarot can predict the future or know other people's thoughts and intentions. It can't.

Neither the compass or psychics/tarot can tell you what your heart's desire is. That is up to you to decide. But if you think about it, and get a clear idea of what that desire is (like when Jack focused on looking for the  "deadman's chest") then the compass (or psychic/tarot/intuitive work) does a better job of showing you how to get to it.

But, ask the right question...be open to the information the compass / psychics / tarot CAN give...and you get a real, helpful, inspiring answer. Do your part...think, decide what you desire, decide what future you want to create...then psychic tarot readings can give you advice about how to get to it. Psychic tarot can help you find the path to where you want to go.

If someone stays focused on a "where is north" kind of question, then the magic compass will never, ever be able to help. If someone stays focused on knowing what someone else is thinking or feeling or will do, then psychic tarot isn't much help either. That is the gift and strength of psychic work: it shifts our thinking. It guides us to the 'out of the box' way of looking at things. You don't expect a compass to show anything other than direction, and it is infuriating if a compass doesn't tell you which way is north.  But if you think out of the box, and realize the magic it DOES have, then you can find treasure. It is frustrating, even infuriating, if tarot readings don't give you the answer you determined to find. But if you are open to the advice psychic tarot CAN give, and not just focused on the one thing you want or expect...then you can find treasure of a different sort. With a little out-of-the-box guidance, you might be able to find what your heart really desires. It may not be a "which way is north" kind of answer, but we can still learn valuable things in unconventional ways when we are open to what psychic tarot can and can't do.

Doing a Psychic or Tarot Reading for Yourself

My friend and Mentor, Joy, has done it again. She really is wise, and a great writer, so I recommend her to you hands-down, full stop.

Her newsletter today (http://us1.campaign-archive1.com/?u=3d2e4805e90d05c3a892356b6&id=cdd5d843d5)  really struck a chord with me. It is a little like that adage "physician heal thyself" And also another piece of genius excellence by Theresa Reed (http://www.thetarotlady.com/what-i-wish-my-tarot-clients-knew/).

It is true what Theresa said, that we readers do (or should do) a lot of self-care...and you should too because you deserve it. It is true too, what Joy said. It is possible to read for oneself...with a little detachment it works well. For me, the best way to gain that little bit of space is to use an oracle tool of some kind....tarot cards, "medicine cards" (by David Carson and Jamie Sams. I've had mine since '89 or so, but they are still around...http://www.amazon.com/Medicine-Cards-Discovery-Through-Animals/dp/0312204914/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1337292547&sr=8-1), or another favorite...I Ching coin toss. The tangible results, the undeniability of the card in front of you, helps keep that step of distance to get the guidance you need, not the answer you want.

Do any of you read for yourself? Id be interested to know what you do to keep yourself honest, what you do to get to the root of the problem and the highest and best guidance for yourself when  a do-it-yourself reading seems the way to go instead of getting a reading from a trusted fellow-reader. What do you think?

08 May 2012

I got nothin'

Right now I’m waiting for the car to be inspected. A nice, simple errand that we all have to do. Waiting rooms and coffee shops are gold mines of creativity, surprisingly enough. If you bring writing to a waiting room, then you are trapped. You HAVE to write because there is nothing else to entertain you except old magazines and (shudder) daytime TV. Right now there is something on involving the Miss USA contestants - I feel like I’m loosing IQ points just from hearing it in the background.

I had only planned to work on “The Vampire Diet” while here, so I didn’t even bring my tarot cards. I'm at a good stopping point with that, and it's close to the time they thought the car would be finished. I have the hunch it is a good point to switch to tarot writing instead. Tried to think of a card that feels right for "today's tarot". I got nothing.

Nothing except the mental image of throwing the cards one by one into a hat and a comedy sitcom parody of abject boredom. Or maybe just hurling the deck all over the floor in a gigantic game of 78 pick up.

So what is that supposed to mean? If I look at that feeling/mental image the same as I would if it was in a psychic cold reading for a client, what would I say? I could take it as a validation of sorts, that it was OK to set aside the tarot manuscript for a little bit to work on "The Vampire Diet". Or it could be seen as a message of petulance and frustration from my subconscious mind...I've had to set aside the "Modern Oracle" manuscript for dissertation and things before (here I make the the promise to the book...and mysef...that will definitely be my next priority project). OR it could be one of those "sometimes a cigar is just a cigar" situations......I AM bored, sleepy and not feeling particularly productive.

Which might just be the message for "Today's Tarot"... tarot isn't the answer to everything. I know that, you know that, we all know that on one level or another. It is tempting to think "the cards" or something outside ourselves can predict the future, steer us in a better direction, or comfort us and reassure us that we are on the right path. It'd be nice. Even knowing better, even without the cards physically here, I want to reach out to them. They are a gateway to learning, but not the knowledge. They are a tool for hearing intuition, not the intuitive information itself. It is a way of learning, even when the lesson is "put me down".

The cards stay home today, and I got nothin'...but that's OK.

We All Have It

We all have it.

Everyone has intuition. We all have "psychic gifts". My friend, Joy Star, wrote this great analogy in her latest newsletter (www.psychicjoystar.com to subscribe).

"Everybody has intuition—it’s a basic ability ingrained within us.  It is similar to learning how to walk which is another basic ability ingrained within us.  Some people take that physical calling to walk and the physical ability to do so and they develop it into something more than basic walking—they may develop physical movement into something that they can take to the Olympics.  It’s there, there’s some natural talent, but there must be some application, effort, practice. "

This is a great analogy. Some people are natural athletes, some people are natural computer geeks, some people are natural psychics. We all can walk, we all can learn to use a computer, we can all learn to use our intuition to help us. That learning requires effort and practice, no matter if it is a toddler learning to walk, a kid learning the computer, or anyone at any age with the courage to listen to our inner knowing.

There are tools to help us learn those things. A baby uses the edge of a sofa or bench to pull themselves up and help them learn to walk. A computer is a tool for using and sharing information. Tarot cards, runes, tea leaves, or other intuition building exercises are tools for learning to listen to our intuition.

Not everyone is a professional athlete. Not everyone works in IT. Not everyone can (or even wants) to do intuitive readings for themselves...much less for other people.

But we all CAN honor our feelings and emotions, and have respect for other people's feelings, emotions, choices. In that way, intuitively speaking, we all can walk.

Today's Tarot - 7 of Cups

Choices have consequences as well as benefits. The good news is that choices have benefits as well as consequences. When one out weighs the other, the choice is clear. When both are equal, or the benefits and consequences are unknown, the choice becomes agonizing. Times such as that is when a little help and guidance can make all the difference. This is where intuition and oracles can give their greatest help. It is all about choices, not predictions.

Judgment: getting results from your consequences

This is where reading tarot cards gets tricky. Tarot, tea leaves, palm lines, just plain psychic impressions: all intuitive tools are conceptual and symbolic. Intuition-helpers are idea and image driven.

The hard part is putting those pure ideas and images into words. Language can be both powerful, and subtle. Words can have a variety of meanings and connotations. "Judgement" is a good example.

Judgement can mean reason, good decision-making, as in "use good judgement" or "an error in judgement". This is the softer side of the word, alluding to making a healthy, logical way through many options.

In the tarot cards, the major arcana card "Judgement" is associated with a slightly harsher, harder connotation of the word. Here "judgement" speaks more to the idea of authoritarian pronouncement, like "passing judgement" or "being judgmental".

To move tarot readings from the era of a flat Earth into the era of quantum physics, we need to move the connotations of this card from hard to soft, from authoritarian judgmentalism to individual reason and good judgement.

One interpretation of this card is "consequences and renewal" (Diane Morgan). This interpretation, I think, captures the best of old and new.
Consequences is still used in a punitive way in our language. We often talk of the "consequences" when rules are broken...the authoritative pronouncement.
Consequences can have multiple shades of meaning. One is "result" or "outcome". Sure, breaking rules results in punishment. But too, any cause results in an effect. That effect can be - you guessed it - judged to be either good or bad.

Put the Judgement major arcana card into modern language and might get this:  Use your head (judgement)and learn from what happens (cause and effect/consequences) to learn from the experience and do better next time (renewal).

Wishing you a day of easy learning.

Romance, Relationships and the Ace of Cups

At Valentine's Day, those of us who aren't thinking of chocolate are probably thinking of romance one way or another.

When it comes to Valentines day and the tarot deck, most people think of "The Lovers" card from the major arcana. When you get to the layers underneath, that card is really about lust, a moment's passion and any strong desire in the abstract. It isn't about finding a real, long-lasting relationship, or about celebrating /preserving such a relationship if we have one.

There are a number of cards that relate to established relationships...cups, wands, even swords, reminding us of wisdom, and loyalty and steadfastness and compassion...the many things that impels us toward wanting a relationship beyond the initial passions of the Lover's card.

All of which begs the question: What card does lead the way to love and romance?

To my way of thinking, it is the Ace of Cups.

That isn't as much of a break with tradition as you may think. Cups cards have long been associated with water, intuition...intuition is a very helpful thing when it comes to affairs of the heart, one place where science and reason doesn't seem to apply as much. Some believe that, historically, the suite of cups in the tarot deck became the hearts suite of our modern gaming card deck because of that connection with the heart. I can't believe that it is just coincidence that "heart" is associated with generic love (I heart NY t-shirts), romance (see everything Valentine's related) AND intuition (a.k.a. "follow your heart").

Ace of Cups means "let your inner light shine". It has to do with your own inner voice, your inner knowing, your true self.

So what does that have to do with finding true love?

The best way to attract your best mate is to be your true self. Being your true self is the path to true love...not hunting, posturing, lusting or any of the other difficult lessons associated with the "Lover's" card. (Although those things can play a part in the early stages of the relationship, it may not help much in finding it in the first place).
There are old and respected spiritual principles at play here. We've all heard of it:
First there is "like attracts like" and "birds of a feather flock together". If you LIVE to show who you are, then it is easier for a truly compatible person to find you.

Second there is what some call the "Rule of Threes"...what you give to the universe returns to you threefold. What goes around, comes around...do unto others and all that. So if you wallow in loneliness and focus on what you don't have, what will or won't MAY be...then you can make yourself pretty miserable, pretty fast. Miserable attracts miserable.

If you want love an happiness in your live...then love and be happy. Only YOU can do that for yourself.  ONLY you can make you happy, if you let yourself. If you are loving and happy, you attract loving and happy. The ace of cups trumps the lovers and you win. Easier said than done, it's true, but simple just the same.

I wouldn't blog if I didn't really think it, and I believe it because I've lived it.

The best example I can give you is my own. In my 20s I was working hard being the "good" person that I was always taught was a "good" person...working hard at a social-service kind of job, going the extra mile at church, even serving as a council member and liturgical deacon at one point. I handbell choir, cooked, danced, cleaned and did all the things I was supposed to do to be what I was supposed to be...but what I wound up being was cheated on, alone , bone-crushingly lonely, and miserable.

Be it luck, destiny, or divine intervention, I began to see another way and CHOSE to walk another path.  I the religion that I found to be empty and un-helpful, started on a spiritual path that made sense and helped me be happy. I got a new job that still served, but was more secular / scientific about it, and started studying Chinese martial arts, taoist philosophy, read about Buddhism, and started to do the things that I loved, being who I really was, and focused on building a good life for myself.

Then I met my soulmate, the light and love of my life, the one who matters most...my husband Jon...in Kung Fu class. Who would've thought. Then came our daughter, and the time to blog, and the rest, as they say, is history.

So this Valentine's week, my best advice to everyone...in a romantic relationship or not....is simply this: Love Life, and it will love you back. Someone else just might love you back too.

Sound and Meditation

Meditation has been used in spiritual practice and personal growth for thousands and thousands of years. Even in the West, scientific studies showing meditation reduces stress (and blood pressure) is old news...

Sources:

Mediation is also one of those easier-said-than-done kind of things. But it is also one of those you-get-out-of-it-what-you-put-into-it kind of things. It doesn't take so much effort. What you put into it is an investment of time. It can help you if you don't do it, even if what you do - to casual observation - appears to be next to nothing at all.

Entire books have been written about meditation. There is much more to meditation than one blog post can cover. Although, if anyone can come close, it is my friend Joy. In her blog and newsletter, she often talks about meditation and how it relates to intuition.

Today she reminds us of the analogy of thoughts and sound in meditation.
Thinking, "inner dialog" some call it, is a normal, natural, spontaneous part of the mind. It is just as normal and natural as sound coming from a gong when you strike it.

The tricky part is the end of the sound, the letting go of the thought.

Just as sound comes naturally from striking a gong, the sound from that strike fades away. Thoughts come as we meditate. The trick is letting them fade away. Sound comes, sound goes. Thoughts come, thoughts go. The really tricky part is not striking the gong again. The really tricky part to meditation, the part that takes the investment of time and practice, is letting thoughts go, and staying in the silence in-between. Let the naturally arising thoughts go...and not rush on to the next thought.

All I know is my own experience. Meditation is one of those things where you can read about it until the cows come home, but there is no substitute for just plain DOing it.

Imagine each though being the ring of a bell (the reason for bell and dorje in Tibetan Buddhism??? I would love to know the answer to that if any of you are knowledgeable about Tibetan Buddhist meditation). For me, if each thought was the clang of a cymbal, I would sound like one of those toy wind-up monkeys clanging away most of the time. On a good day, it is more like a wind-up monkey with a bad spring. It clangs away...then I catch myself thinking, and let it go. It might be quiet for just a second before the clanging starts again. And then catch it-stop it as second.  And so the cycle goes. A second is better than nothing, and maybe someday the wind up monkey toy will sit quiet for more than a heartbeat. But even that clanging will fade. Even that clanging can be followed by a moment of meditative silence.

So what does meditation have to do with the blog topic, Tarot? Listening to your intuition is a kind of meditation. The right side of the brain is a quiet temple of meditation compared to the clanging, thinking logic of the left side. The cards are just a tool...a doorway into that quiet place. Some problems need us to stand firmly in the doorway, using both reasoned thought and silent insight. Sometimes we need to step into silence...even for a heartbeat...to see our way forward, to know what to do with the next round of clanging monkey-toy sounds.

Wishing you both pleasant bell-rings and silent moments

Today's Tarot - Queen of Swords

There are many different "meanings"...shades of connotation. So even though the Queen of Swords turned up fairly recently, there are still plenty of ideas to explore with this card.

When reading tarot, or learning to expand your intuition, it is helpful to have several books and resources. Many books about tarot give long lists of keywords that are more confusing than helpful. The trick to it, so I've found, is to find one main resource that resonates with your own understanding of the card...what your gut instinct tells you is the "right" meaning for the card, but have one or two others on standby. Sometimes, you will instinctually know that this primary meaning just isn't quite the right choice of words. Then you can go browsing...look up other meanings, use other reference sources, or just draw from your own insight until you find just the right-feeling meaning.

Sometimes, coincidence will point the way.

Today's card, the Queen of Swords, just came up recently...then, the idea from my favorite reference seemed to fit like a charm. Today, not so much...so I pulled out my other favorite reference and TA-DA there is just the right idea: sharpness of spiritual vision.

No only did that feel right, there was the added validation of coincidence. Just today I read a newsletter article by my teacher, Joy. It's hard to sum up her insight in a sentence, but the closest I can get is this: To have the best psychic insight you can have, be the best person you can be.

Psychic, intuitive, spiritual ability is a normal, natural part of the human experience. To have the spiritual vision, be the best you that you can be.

Decide using both sides of your brain

Tarot is a very spiritual thing

It deals with ethics, intangibles, decisions, emotions...but little science outside the concepts of probability, uncertainty, and time as an extant 4th dimension...

So often intuitive work is dismissed or even aggressively opposed by the science community.

At the same time, many focus only on intuition, aggressively clinging to the old notion of fate and predictions, actively surrendering their power to the unproven and unknown.

To choose one way over the other is unbalanced. To choose science over intuition or intuition over science is to miss half of what is going on. The real truth, as I see it, contains both.

To make a good decision, the best decision...about anything, be it career, romance, relationships or general guidance...the best decision comes from a middle-way, balanced consideration of both.

Holism applies. Taking a holistic approach gives the best of both worlds.

This is a logical world, and a logical biased society. Deciding only on the basis of psychic perception means a high risk of failure.

If you live your life based on science and logic and hard facts alone, then you risk emotional starvation. Life is thin and grey without beauty and creativity, and at risk for emotional consequences.

Science does not discount beauty. Spirituality does not discount logic and common sense.

Humans were born...evolved...with BOTH aspects manifested in hard reality in our neural structure. Left-brained logic and right-brained creativity are both utterly necessary. In a world of logic-bias, Tarot, oracles, psychics and the like are tools to help us listen to our right-brains, to help us access the balance and advice the right-brain, our hearts and the subtle spiritual aspects of life have to offer. Tarot and psychic work adds color and depth to life, as does any spiritual endeavor.

Next big decision, use common sense. Next big decision, listen to your heart. Both.
