Diane Morgan, in "Magical Tarot , Mystical Tao", associates the 9 of cups with insight. Why insight, when the suite of cups is so often associated with romance and close relationships. I think it has to do with the suite of cups being associated with the element water.
Think of a cup of clear, clean water, and you can find several analogies for the nature of insight.
There is depth: sometimes you have to 'drink deep' from the cup of wisdom to get to the insight you need.
There is stillness: Only still water can reflect an image, give us the image or insight we need.
Finally there is the surface: Sometimes a cup of water is just that. It is water. Nothing fancy, no wine or flavor. Sometimes the greatest insights come from the surface of the cup of water...from seeing things just as they are, for what they are. Like Sigmund Freud saying "sometimes a cigar is just a cigar". Or, if you are a "Game of Thrones" fan, "See with your eyes" as Syrio Forel taught Arya.
If you are feeling frustrated, digging deep for insight and finding none...then try the other aspects of the cup. Try being still, seeing with your eyes, and seeing the magic in things just as they are.
