Q&A: The Secret to Making Dreams Come True

Q: I've read the book "The Secret". I have a clear vision of the career I want, and how well it will turn out. I can see myself as an officer in the military, wearing the uniform, and having a good career. How can these visions help? How does this means of making your dreams come true actually work?

A. Good question!  The answer is a little complicated - a little yes and a little no.  In my opinion, you can create your own future...but it doesn't work quite the way it they make it seem. You DO create your own future, BUT you create it through your choices, what you do, what you say...or what you choose not to do or not to say...not by sitting around thinking about it. Magnetizing, drawing things to you has its place, but it is not everything. You know that yin-yang symbol in marital arts? It's true...you can't have yin without yang and vice versa. Just effort won't get you where you want to go, you have to use your head and your heart too. By the same token, mind without action and effort won't get you there either. 

I believe visualizations are important and useful. But they are to guide, decide and motivate NOT to do the creating all by themselves. 

You mentioned visualizing yourself as a successful military officer.  That vision, and your intuitive response to it, can help you decide if this really is the right career path for you. It can guide your choices in working toward that goal. You might want to choose to do ROTC instead of football for example, or choose not to throw the punch that keeps you out of trouble and gets you into officer training. Those are just examples...nothing literal...but you get the idea.

If your goal requires a lot of sustained work, effort, difficult choices, or sacrifices, it's easy to get down and discouraged sometimes. Visualizations can help you stay motivated. If you are in the middle of some really suck-ish basic training, visualize the end result that you've seen before to help you hang in there. 

The law of attraction and similars is a real thing...like attracts like. It doesn't magically deliver a particular future, and visualizations won't give you the exact details of what the future holds, BUT your heart and mind-set will attract like minded people into your life and will make your journey easier and more fulfilling. As you learn, grow, work, visualize, love and live your dream - you might find old friends fall away and new like-minded people start to come into your life. This takes away the drag of some negative energy people and adds positive energy people to your life. So focusing on light, compassion, your goals does help bring those things into your life, but in this supportive way, not a direct POOF magic way.

That's how I think you can make your dreams into reality. Focus, meditation, visualization can help guide you to good choices, and help keep you motivated to do the things you need to do in order to make your dream a reality. Aligning your thoughts and energies with positive thinking, love, compassion, optimism - that will help clear the way, and draw supportive people into your life...but you still need to act. Visualizations show you the right path, and motivate you to keep going, but you still have to do the walking.

Q: Hello. The reading we did last year turned out to be right on target, so I wanted to talk to you again. It isn't good news. It turns out I will need more schooling to get the job I want, but the couple of applications I've put in have been rejected. Six months ago, I connected with an old friend, and we started dating. I really care for her, and thought she was my true soul mate. Then a month ago she stopped talking to me. I don't know what happened, but can you tell me if we will hook back up or have any future together? With both of these things together, I'm starting to feel really discouraged and am losing hope. What is your advice?

I'm so glad you found our last reading together to be helpful.

I'm sure you understand that there is no way to predict if you and your friend will get back together. Tarot can not read her heart, mind or intentions. She is as much a part of this as you are. The only way to know why things have changed and what she wants is to talk to her directly if possible. If she won't talk with you, then there is no choice but to respect that and move on. Who knows? This might be an opening to meet someone new who truly is your soulmate. Keep hope, keep the light in your heart. The best way to attract your perfect soulmate into your life is to be your truest self. To bring love, give love...be a kind, bright person and your soulmate will come to that light, whoever she may be.

I'm sorry to hear that there have been so many set-backs getting into school, too.

My hunch is the best thing right now is a "mediation" reading. Let's stay focused...the card will give you and idea. It is something to ponder, and it might show you the way forward. My hunch is it will be a career focused card, since the relationship is at a point that needs real-world conversation more than tarot guidance.

After three shuffles, your card is "Justice" from the major arcana portion of the tarot deck.

Being a major arcana card, it feels as if energy and change is just on the horizon. It does feel more career connected. Perhaps with little going on in the romance department, now is the time to put your energy all into career and education. It takes a LOT of time and energy to work and go to school at the same time if that is how things need to be. Don't forget, two things...1. Persistence pays off. There is a saying "fake it until you make it"...keep going, keep applying, keep looking, don't lose hope. It does feel as if energy and change and movement is on the horizon for you. And 2. All the energy and effort you invest in your career is an investment in YOU...your quality of life. It may be part of the learning / growing process that helps you become the perfect soulmate for your ultimate mate. This time of trial may the process that helps make you into the person you want to be...and that your soulmate wants to be with.

The justice card means "wisdom"...wisdom is made up of heart and mind, logic and intuition, all working together. Also there is a sense of "find wisdom". Although there are other cards more specific to this, it feels like this card is calling in that energy of finding a mentor. Is there someone who you can turn to for advice, guidance, a referral, or anything else to help you along with academics or career? Is there one of the schools that would be willing to talk to you to say why they rejected the application and what you can do to get a better outcome later or on other applications? Do you have access to any career counseling or any how-to information about applying to schools? Are there online resources that can help??

Hang in there...I hope the positive energy really turns out as nice for you as this card seems to say. It really does feel like good stuff is there for you, as long as you don't give up. Please keep trying...it feels as if it will pay off in the long run. It usually does.

Wealth dwells in the realm of mind, logic, wisdom - and compassion. A fortune is easily squandered. A little can feel like a lot if you manage it well. What you give comes back to you in one form or another. Money can't buy happiness, but generosity, compassion and connection can.

Pathway Money / Wealth Reading.

Q:  I have a lot of money concerns right now. My mind is spinning, I feel so stressed - I don't know what to do next. Do you have any insight?

A:  When I read your questions, the "mind is spinning part" caught my attention.


My intuition is that is part of the problem as much as a symptom of it. Often times money and career issues need logic more than tarot readings. The value of the reading will be focus, more than anything specific.

The first card (lessons from the past) that comes up for you is the knight of cups: It's traditional meaning is "sufficiency" or "enough". Here is where logic comes into play. What is enough? How much money do you really need to get by, realistically. What can you live without? What can you really live with? More than hopes and dreams, what is it you realistically need to get by with enough in the next week? Month? Year? What do you need to do to get that amount? Is THAT something you can live with? Do you need to find a temporary strategy until you can get the work / income that you really need? The key here is knowing what is NEEDED and what is WANTED. Meet your needs - then go about figuring our how to get what you want. "First things first" as they say. Have you ever had a tendency to want to do everything at once, solve everything at once? Has there been anything in the past that helped you overcome that tendency? Maybe that can help agian.

Forgive me if this is wrong, but the feeling I get here is that the spinning and confusion comes from mixing needs and wants, and getting things jumbled. Are you familiar with the process of "triage".  Tend to most urgent things first. There is a basis for this in science. Psychology shows that people who are most stressed are ones that have a hard time prioritizing things...everything seems like equal importance. When you can sort things out, tend to the most important things first, take things one step at a time...they become much less stressful.

Next card is the King of Cups: (Lesson now) It is a card of mentoring and guidance. If you need to get help or advice about putting things in order...to put the important things first, then don't hesitate to seek that help. Even the most experienced entrepreneurs need ideas sometimes. Nothing wrong with "brainstorming" or finding someone with your expertise or greater to "bounce ideas off of" and so on. "Find an expert" is the feeling here...not a tarot reader on the internet, but a real flesh and blood expert in finances or in your career field to help you get things back on track. An expert in money / finance / career can help you figure out what to put first, even if you are an expert yourself, especially if you are feeling stressed and overwhelmed.

Finally the third card, the way forward,  is the King of Coins. The lesson here is akin to the idea of the "spiritual law of attraction" Focus your energy on solving problems...first problem first. Focus on the possible bad things that could happen and you call them too you. Focus on concrete solutions to concrete problems, and you call those to you too. Allow the good. Work for the good. Looking at the "big picture" can help you, but the "big picture" doesn't include all the stuff that MIGHT happen. The "big picture" approach can help best when it is pragmatic and realistic. If you include all the things the "might" be, that "could have been" , and all the "could haves" "should haves" and "would haves"...then the "big picture" is overwhelming, stressful,  hopeless. Sometimes after you look at the big picture only to decide where you are, where you want to be, and how to get there. Once you've made practical, realistic decisions about those three things, then go small...take it step by step. One step at a time, first things first.

Q&A: Where can we have a happy marriage?

Q: We like where we live now, but my husband has better job offers in two different places. We've decided we want to make the move for the promotion. They are both pretty equal job offers, so it has come down to location for us, but we can't decide between xxxxxx, where the housing costs are better than here (we could get out from under our mortgage) but the weather is hot and humid, and we both hate that. The other offer is in zzzzzz, but the housing there costs a little bit more, but the weather is just gorgeous  We really can't decide between the two, can the cards offer any guidance? Where can we go that would give us a happy marriage in the years to come?

A: Hello ******.

Let's look at this with a simple yes/no reading...but before we start I have to say this...

It doesn't matter one tiny bit where you live. It looks to me like the heart of your question is wanting to keep a happy marriage...that happens in your heart, not in where you live.

 You can live anywhere in the universe, and be happy with a happy marriage. If the relationship is good, it will be good in a shack in the middle of a swamp. If the relationship is in trouble, then it would be troubled in a free mansion in paradise. 

Also, before pulling the yes/no cards...think about the criteria you already mentioned...cost and weather. Which of those two things is more important AND which of those two things will affect your happiness the most? Is hot an humid going to wear on you over the years or will money concerns be a bigger strain? 

PLUS don't forget, nothing is permanent...if you get somewhere, and don't like it, you can move again. Instead of buying right away, why not rent a while to see if you like the area? What other things besides mortgage and weather would make you happy where you live? What do you want to avoid? Maybe it would help this decision to expand your list of pros and cons. If you consider lots of things, it might be easier to see which location has the more plus - things and which has more minus - things.

..and also lift the burden of permanence. Stay mobile, and wait to tie in to a mortgage once you are sure it is the right place for you. That way you can make your decision about where you want to live based on something other than the weather... like lifestyle, recreation, taxes, schools (if that applies), career opportunities etc etc

So leaving marriage and happiness totally out of it (that part is up to you two, no matter where you live)...

"Should ****** and spouse move to zzzzzzz"... (one ace, two minor arcana cards)leaning toward no...this is the patter of you COULD...but SHOULD you? Things to consider here is balance, and clear-thinking. Would you lifestyle here pull things out of balance? Would you have to work such long hours to afford the house that other parts of your life would suffer? Are you seeing this area as it really is? Or do you have an idealized real estate booklet and tourist attraction sort of impression of this place?

"Should ******* and spouse move to xxxxxxx"?... (two aces and a minor arcana card) leaning yes...the drawback might be that it will take some daring and mental toughness to make it work. It may be rocky at the start, but you can overcome the challenges. It may feel like you made the wrong choice to begin, but be brave, and you will be rewarded in surprising ways, personal growth, awakening, happiness ways...in time, if you have courage. There is great potential for spiritual lessons and soul-satisfaction here, independent of finances.

Q&A: Should I move?

Q: I live in the same small town where I have always lived, except for college. I was recently downsized from a steady job. I'm single, and don't have the family attachments here that I used to have. Moving to find work is fine with me, and right now **** looks promising. On the other hand, I really want to put down roots and raise a family someday soon. Should I stay close to my roots or should I go to where it would be easier to find work?

A. There is a three card reading that I learned from my teacher that is perfect for decisions like this. 

The first card is a yes/no answer to your question, although sometimes (in my experience) it is more helpful to look at it as "maybe" yes or no...you always have options open to you.

The next card is the things working against you...any cautions

The last card is the things working in your favor...advice and encouragement.

When I shuffled the card, the question I kept in mind was should you move. The answer was the 8 of Wands, which means "great potential", "infinity" and "wholeness". I think this means that the world is your oyster...as you said yourself, you are in a perfect position to move, to explore the world. But, in general, this would be read as a no card (aces, cups, coins being associated with yes). BUT...and this is a BIG provision....I don't think it is saying don't move. I think the energy is speaking to the part of your question where you are talking about putting down roots. If you move now...which has a positive feel to it too...it may not be to the place where you wind up putting down roots. Where you move may only be wonderful, but not a forever kind of thing. 

The next card is telling in that respect...the caution card is the Ace of Cups...which has to do with your "inner light"...your inner wisdom, the special things about you, your happiness. I think this card is hinting that the desire for roots and family might be more important than job and money in the long run. If you move, do it to learn what feeds your soul...use your opportunity to move now, to learn about what you want in your long-term place to live...what kind of place can let you give what you want to give to your future family. Use this time to learn what makes you happy and fulfilled...what place feeds your soul. Does the new place speak to you on a deep, spiritual level...or does it show how much home does that for you? That sort of thing. The question is less about finding a job and more about finding your heart a true home. No matter where your "roots" have been in the past, you can put down new roots very easily if a place is comfortable, and right, and really speaks to your heart. If it is really really right...both work and roots will eventually come together in the right place at the right time.

The thing working in your favor is the Wheel of Fortune card, which means change. If you move, and it isn't right, you can always move back. If you stay, and it isn't right, you can still go a little later. You can choose to stay single and unattached, or you can choose to root here if love calls. This card is asking you to be at peace with yourself...the choice of where to live can always be made permanent or it can be undone, to one extent or another. This card has a sense of freshness about it. Again the feeling is a bit in favor of changing countries, changing work...as a journey of discovery...you may find your soul-home out there, which makes the journey important. You may come to realize how much the place you are now means to you...also making the journey important. Economics change. Minds change. If you stay open to change, then you make this into a win-win situation for yourself.

Three card reading about career change

Q. With the changes in the economy, I've taken my career in a new direction. It is a little un-nerving to start something new at my age. Am I headed in the right direction?

A. I've been working with my mentor, and re-reading some of her writing...I feel drawn to approaching this like a 'yes/no' reading, amped up a little bit. Adding a little of my own spin to her card lay-out, let's approach it like this. Three stacks of cards (like we've done before), but with the left stack being the main yes/no indicator, middle stack is cautions, things to watch out for, the right stack things you are doing particularly well or working in your favor. Ace is yes, no ace is no (easy enough, right?)

The ace of swords is associated with the element of air, and the sword on the rider-waite deck is straight up. "Up" is a strong energy and concept around this card. Ted Andrews reads this a "Unique new rhythms of success" in his Animal Wise Tarot (www.dragonhawkpublishing.com). I think this speaks of two basic reassurances...that your new path is on the UPswing, and holds a very positive energy right now. I understand from my Mentor Joy (www.psychicjoystar.com) that the astrology right now is powerful and positive as well, which crosses right into the second point...good timing. Your natural rhythm is spot-on for switching...I 'hear' "good timing".

I picked up the "Animal Wise" cards since you've liked them before. In this deck, Judgement is associated with whales, who can dive to incredible depths, so it is read as "new depths of creativity". Does your new career use your creativity more than in the past? Often creative work is more free-form and less structured than more traditional, didactic jobs. The are also more insecure in a lot of ways. The caution here is in second guessing yourself. The first-impulse feeling I got from the card was "trust your judgment". I've heard self-employment is a big trend, and it feels like being "on a trapeze without a net"...but it is also a big opportunity to learn, and one of the big lessons is to hone your judgement, and to trust your judgement.

Finally...drum roll please...ACE of wands, so yes, you are on a good path with this choice. It is 'frog' read as "fertility and new beginnings"...perfect for what you are doing, and encouragement for your new beginning. The from on the photo is bright green...green is, remember, associated with growth, healing, and to some degree wealth. (not everyone uses green money...but there are traditional reasons, I suppose, that we chose that as the color of our currency...green, growing, is a good thing to associate with it anyway)

Today's Tarot -

The World card is a hopeful, encouraging end to the major arcana. It speaks of career success, happiness, love, abundance. It hints at an ability to touch infinity, and draw what we need into our lives in an insightful, productive way.


This card is part of the major arcana because it also carries some potent reminders about success. Sometimes there are costs, balances that must be struck. Sometimes that balance is carried on the back of perception. Success comes and goes in an eyeblink when we shift our perception of our life and of the world around us.


The World card can remind us that success doesn't have to be huge or immediate in order to be valid, valuable, and enduring.

FAQ - Why be a psychic?

Last Tuesday, I did an intuition building workshop at the Whitehall Library. It was a great group, and loads of fun. 


Most people just want to know how long I've been reading cards. It is a good question. They should ask things like that. People should be confident that a reader or intuitive teacher is right for them. If experience is what they need, then length of practice is a question they properly should ask. 
Another common question is why I started doing Tarot / intuitive work in the first place. Also a fair question, it speaks to issue of motivation and builds trust. It is a good thing to think about and a great question to ask.


The answer? Well, that takes a little explaining.


To my mind, it begs the question of why does anyone choose any career? I'm firmly in the camp of anyone-can-do-this. "Psychic" ability isn't a special gift, it is a learned skill. Linear logic is a normal, natural function of the left part of the brain. Anyone can learn to do arithmetic. Creativity and non-linear logic is a normal, natural function of the right brain. Anyone can learn to listen to their intuition. From that perspective, the process of choosing to be a tarot entertainer is no different than choosing to be an accountant.


So why not be a nice, respectable accountant instead of  an unpaid writer or fringe-element tarot reader? Because I hate detailed math, and have no talent at it. I might not like it but I could learn to do it. Able and enjoyable are two different things. I have the ABILITY be an accountant...but I also have the ability to shove flaming bamboo shards under my fingernails which would be just about as enjoyable to my mind.


AH-HA! That's why anybody chooses any career...because they like doing it. We tend to like things that come easily to us. We choose careers that have some sort of give-back, some sort of gain, otherwise, why do it? The work we do has some benefit, even if it is just a paycheck. Do you something you love and you take home more than just money. You take home happiness too.  


The same is true of "psychics". We like working with people, talking to people, helping people. We just have a knack for taking that non-verbal, non-linear right-brain symbolic, creative, associative thinking called intuition and putting it into simplified, linear, logical language. The "psychic gift" comes from putting hunches and feelings into words that other people relate to on some level. 


Not every enjoys that, just like not everyone has a knack for accounting. Or fixing cars. Or running a business. Or teaching children...or any of the other thousands of jobs we all do.


I enjoy it. It helped me in the past, and I hope intuitive work like tarot readings can help other people too. Sure, it is just "entertainment", nothing earth-shaking...but I see it as "entertainment with a heart". I think of it as a folk art form. Just like a song can lift your spirits and make you feel better, a reading can do the same thing. At the very least it is a temporary diversion from stressful times. At best, it helps you solve a problem creatively, and find a way forward that you might not have seen before. That in itself can ease stress. From that perspective, choosing to do tarot readings is a choice to help and heal...not unlike the impetus to go into the health field or work with holistic health education.

Daily meditation - ace of coins - 8 March 2011

This card resonates with that old adage "action speaks louder than words".

Coins cards tend to be a bit physical - plain, and tend to turn up in readings about career and wealth and prosperity.

Yet "greatness" is a very abstract idea. Many of the qualities we associated with "greatness" are intangibles...generosity, leadership, compassion, integrity, fairness and so many more.

Would we value such things as much if they weren't tied to actions?

If this card speaks to you today, let your light shine, let your greatness show through actions. As Ghandi so famously said "Be the change you want to see in the world". Or be, as Jon Stewart said of Rand Paul, the "walkiest of the talkers"

Think of the opposite. A disingenuous, false-faced, emotionally dishonest, believe one thing while you say and do something entirely else...its a very painful, self-loathing unhappy way to live. Walking your talk, living your true beliefs is very liberating. If your beliefs and true feelings are in a calm, compassionate, middle place ("a tamed mind brings happiness") then walking your talk is a happy liberation to boot.

Combine all of that with the real-world-ness of the suite of coins...then all of this begins to resonate with the idea of manifestation, of like attracts like...if you are happy, genuine, honest with yourself and others...then you likely begin to attract the same sort of people to you.

May this be a day of freedom, happiness, and walk-i-ness.

It is so easy to focus only on the thing causing you pain, and miss everything around it...focusing only on the thorn that pricked your finger, and missing the rose's fragrance.

So often we turn to Tarot, wanting an answer to one thing...career, romance, finances...and the answer is none of the above...

Career, family, romance...these are the crown jewels of life.

Sometimes with have to build and repair the crown before the jewels can be set. Sometimes you have to build the crown before the gemstones are found.

FAQ - "How accurate are you?"

The answer is simple: Accuracy is in the eye of the beholder.

It is all very Albert Einstein, really. The "accuracy" of any given psychic, or of any given reading hinges directly on the expectations of the person getting the reading, and their ability to think symbolically and abstractly.

If you were expecting to see a specific percentage answer by now, you might not like what follows. But if you are curious about how psychic "accuracy" realistically works, please read on.

Let's look at two examples - one drawn from years of doing Tarot readings, the other drawn from science.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again...this is only to draw a parallel between the two schools of thought. In no way is this to say that science proves intuition or vice-versa. Both are radically different facets of the human experience. I believe when we find similar patterns in such different fields, it hints to a higher truth, an underlying reality that supports both...not one causing or explaining the other...

But back to psychic "accuracy"...

One of the most common questions I hear is someone wanting to know when they will meet the love of their life or what will happen in their current love relationship.

If the sitter expects, and can only accept a specific answer, then the accuracy rate will be exactly 0%. Sure, it would be nice, and make your life easy if a psychic could tell you that your soulmate would be waiting at the bus stop on January 14 at 5:08 pm. But what higher purpose would that serve? What could you learn from that? How could it help you make a better life for yourself or become a better person??

What if the answer was from a different, larger perspective. What if the psychic message was that it is important to get your career in order before you focus on romance?

That may indeed be what needs to happen for the sitter (the person getting a psychic reading) to have a happy lifelong relationship. That message might be totally 100% accurate - but if all the sitter is willing to hear is specifics, like date or time...then that reading appears totally unrelated and inaccurate.

Let's take this example one step further. Suppose in addition to the message about career and romance, the image of 'violets' also came through. If the sitter thinks only with fixed, preconceived expectations, the notion of "violets" might seem like random nonsense. BUT if the sitter looks at it from a symbolic mindset, they might remember that violets were their Grandmother's favorite flower...and Grandmother had always told stories about how stressful the Great Depression had been on her marriage.
