Major Arcana Meditation: Death card
Today's news events bring two major arcana cards to mind....Death and Justice. I hope we as a society can see the karma, the spiritual implications of what we do in response to this...
Celebrating a human death is something quite different from justice.
Justice utterly depends on fairness and wisdom to exist. Celebrate life and rebirth, certainly...
But stop and think of the spiritual repercussions before celebrating violence and death.

Daily Meditation - Queen of Wands
The queen of wands: Who cares for the caretaker?
Part of being a healer, be it with medicines, herbs, words, or oracles, is having good judgement.
Part of good judgement is knowing our limits. Sometimes a reader or a psychic need a moment to nurture themselves, recharge the batteries so to speak. Sometimes the reader needs guidance too.
Who is the reader's reader? Sometimes it is another...two heads are better than one. Just like two eyes work together to see depth and detail...sometimes two "third eye" views serve the same purpose.
Sometimes the reader's reader is the subtle dimensions directly. Sometimes the reader's respite works like the tower card...where they withdraw from the daily activity, and go to a higher point of view to re-orient, plan, find inspiration.
Do you have to be a psychic or intuitive reader to do these things? No. Very often we turn our intuition outward, to help us navigate through life. On occasion it helps to turn out intuition inward...to listen to what our physical and emotional selves need to be nurtured, strong and healthy.
Is your mood or physical feeling telling you something? Listen. Even readers need readers sometimes. Even the strongest warriors need a good meal and a rest by fire. Even the greatest wizards kick their feet up with a warm cup of pumpkin juice every now and then, metaphorically speaking at least...
What is it your inner self is asking for today? A stretch? A walk in the sun? A nap? A bowl of chicken soup? A game? Inspiration? Grounding?
Wishing you a day of balancing and nourishing that lays the foundation for an even better tomorrow.

three card pathway reading 13 March 2011
Just following impulse, instinct and intuition. It seemed like a day for a three card reading instead of the usual daily meditation. I'm not sure why, but here it is, offered in the hope it is helpful to someone.
Lessons from the past: King of Wands, leadership. Wands often have to do with our inner journey, inner learning. This card has a feel of "learn from your mistakes of the past"...in times where you have been timid, it is time to be a leader. Stand up for what you believe is right. My mind is drawn to the political events in Wisconson, USA. Also a bit to other peaceful pro-democracy demonstrations world wide. Now my mind is drawn to the Jacob character in Twilight. Just because a natural leader has put off that role in the past, does not mean they can not assume leadership I 'hear' "sometimes the benevolant king can ascend the throne". On an individual level, the past may have been difficult, mistakes may have been made, hurtful things may have happened...but you can still act with compassion and dignity even if others don't. Assume your throne.
The current concern: 6 of wands, peace. One person does not a peaceful society make. One person a peaceful life can make, and many peaceful people together can transform the world. Here my mind is drawn to a strong feeling of compassion toward Japan, even more so than other disasters for some reason...I don't know why, it isn't right per se, but that is the feeling of the moment. Perhaps because I just heard a news report that this one was magnitudes worse than Haiti even... it is the way geology works. The Richter scale goes up by magnitudes...one point up on the scale means damage and repercussions many times worse than the point before. Although I haven't thought of it, or looked at the website in quite a long time, my mind is drawn to the "I take the vow" project that was, at least in part, started by Deepak Chopra. I don't know why that comes to mind or quite how it relates to this, but I give it in case it helps somehow. I get the sense that organization isn't quite what it was when it started, but I associate that idea of "be the change you want to see in the world" both with that website and with this card right now.
The path forward: 2 of coins, balance. Here I think of the "middle way"...that moderation, balance, and avoiding extremes is the best way forward right now. Act...but act effectively. Extremism, fundamentalism, judgmentalism, or other extremes are a bad idea right now. The feeling here is very much balance, and especially "work smarter, not harder" . Efficiency is a key to having the resources to play, and to bring a life situation back into balance.
The "cold reading" portion this (the mental images that may or may not have to do with the cards or current question) shows first of all an image of the USA map...this reading my be for the nation as a whole, though the image is faint, and I'm not really confident in saying that. The feeling and idea of CALM comes through as essential. Also the phrase CALM AUTHENTICITY. (can use that advice myself...hope it helps you too).
And there the energies end.

daily meditation - 8 of wands - 9 Feb 2011
Does anyone else remember back in the 80s when "personality types" was kind of a thing...you know the driven "type A", the laid back "type B", and the type "T" thrill seeker? I think we all have elements of all three, but for some one type may dominate. I forget the details in the intervening 25 years...but somewhere around '84 or '85 I saw a tv show about the "T" types that was really interesting...there were positive and negative type Ts...those who get a thrill in benign ways like procrastinating, and others who found thrills in antisocial and illegal ways. The show also made the distinction between 'physical' and 'mental' type T...people who are into extreme sports and people who enjoy challenging ideas, that push the envelope of their world view, complex and difficult ideas, people who like to solve problems and think on their feet.
Of course you can combine all three aspects...positive and negative of either type of thrill seeker.
The 8 of wands is a great card for Mental T + people.
The ideas in the card are a little challenging, especially for "type A" black and white thinkers.
It has to do with what German speakers might call "gestalt". Eastern philosophy might call it "the ten thousand things". Cosmos. The all-that-is. I see it as akin to what Richard Bach calls the "IS" or the "IS-ness" of the universe. It is a really BIG idea behind this card.
Like the Tower card in the major arcana, it is a call to perspective...where does this problem or question fall in that big picture of everything?
Like the Fool card in the major arcana, this card also hints at the potential in things. What is the potential hidden in your question or problem? How can you make lemonade out of lemons?
Beyond that, this is the card that takes those two major arcana ideas and connects it with totality, and wholeness. Like the Magician card, what can you manifest out of the totality?
I've heard it said that part of the reason Hindu and Buddhist mala have 108 beads is the "8" is they symbol for infinity if you put it on its side. True enough...but I don't think that is the reason. (the rationale that it was to give a buffer in case some of the 100 mantra were mis-said or mis-counted, so if you say a mala, it validly counts as 100 makes more sense to me. Mala are ancient and Eastern, the infinity symbol that looks like 8 on its side is old, but of Greek origin if I understand correctly. )
But you can see why the 8 of wands is a great card for mental T +...lot's of juicy ideas. I wonder why ideas like this are in the minor arcana instead of the major...why such a minor card incorporates so many different major ideas.
Hmmm...come to think of it, there is a lesson there, too...
All the cards are part of the same deck, and better, worse, major, minor, positive, negative, evil, good, sacred, mundane, complex, simple...they are all just judgments and classification that we put on things to help us understand them. Which arcana the card is in, how "profound" we may judge the ideas doesn't really matter if you see the deck, and everything else, as a seamless whole.

Knight of coins: "When paradigms shift, worlds change"

A glass half full, or a glass half empty doesn't change the glass, but it makes our experience totally different. You don't need to change the water in the glass to change your perception of it.
Perception is a coin card because it so strongly relates to wealth and contentment. If we have enough, and appreciate that sufficiency, then there is no need for excess. This is just like the Buddhist notion of non-attachment. It isn't lacking something that makes you unhappy...it is the wanting that something that is the problem...of course this applies to the the extra 'somethings', beyond survival, beyond life necessities. There is a difference between wanting a bowl of rice to survive another day and wanting to drive a bigger car.
I forget where I heard it, but it true..."the wealthiest man is the one who wants for nothing".
Whether that means having so much stuff that you don't want anything...or just not wanting all that extraneous stuff you don't have...well, that is your choice, your perception.

Arc of History
I've always liked that phrase "the arc of history". How will we bend that arc? How will we be remembered. Building a home for destiny seems more important than predicting what that destiny will be.
I was planning on doing a 2011 "four seasons reading" for you all. But then, in my e-mail this morning, was a note from a local newspaper reporter. In answering that, some ideas came to mind, so I'll just roll with that. It feels right, and seems what I should do to serve the highest and best right now...and after all, that is what intuition is all about, right? Following the subtleties rather than logical form to make good choices and create a bright future, yes?
Here are some thoughts that came through as I wrote to the reporter (thanks again for contacting me, Rick, if you are reading this).
On a local level: the city council has the energy more than the mayor and are closer to the right decision for the city pension plan.
There is the possibility of a return of tech manufacturing...something electronic, silicone based. Real goods, but high tech, perhaps green energy related, perhaps located in the Mon Valley side of town. Something with glass panels like a solar panel maybe.
We're off the hook for Snowmageddon locally...more days like today, rainy and warm here in the 'burgh. But that isn't my idea...I'm just agreeing with the weather channel, really.
January feels quiet, peaceful, but something happens around Mardi Gras. Has a surprising feel, but positive. Not a disaster, but almost like a windfall, a good surprise. That may be both local and national...as I write this, DC and the capital building come to mind. Definitely close to or related to Mardi Gras, I can almost TASTE the donuts! (mmmmm - paczki day).
There was a flash of something about a "celebrity" wedding, connected with the color red...the mental image of red glassware and napkins etc on a crisp white table cloth. Felt very celebrity-gossipy-fluff-nothing, but interesting to people who are in to that kind of thing.
GOAL! (I'm listening to the alumni game at the winter classic as I write this. Yes, psychics can multitask. I did a three card just-for-fun reading that didn't look too promising for the alumni game. I would LOVE it if they prove me WRONG on that one! GO PENS!!)
K...back to business.
The Gulf of Mexico will be back in the news...the mental image is of a black area in the water. More fallout from the deep water horizon...anoxic zones, deep water fallout, wildlife struggling...not from oil coating, but from baseline ecosystem damage....at the level of plankton and building up through the food chain. The mental image is of dark water, like a peat lake or muddy pond...no oxygen, lots of tannins, feeling of decay. There is a mental image of a large black tube or pipe, bubbling air down through the water like a giant aquarium. That isn't to say that is the answer...maybe it is, I don't know...but it may be a symbolic way of showing the problem. Ocean wildlife will be a concern, and a rallying point for many of us...especially around spring and summer.
I get the feeling that things will go well for the Obama adminstration: people will begin to see what he has done and again see what is possible "he will have earned his Nobel prize" is the feeling. Americans, real, grass roots population will rally behind him..."have his back" against dark forces...more of a domestic threat than international issues. There is a black way, a dark and wrong possible future...only the voices of ordinary people can push it back, and choose the brighter way. "Don't be fooled again" is the message.
Again with the donuts..."fun and food and celebration" is the feeling here, as if that may be a theme through the first 3/4 of the year. Beyond that, the final quarter of the year feels more somber and serious, or at least a return to calm.
That is all of the unstructured impressions that come through.
Let's look at that four seasons set of cards after all. Remember...this isn't a prediction, but more food for thought as you make your choices. It is about the tone of the season and the arcing of history so you can adapt and better follow your own intuition.
Since winter just begun, we'll start there. This winter...now through around mid-march... is symbolized by the 2 of swords. The meaning given here is "mystical unity". The feeling is much like New Years itself...a time of reflection and introspection. We must look where we've been to fully understand where we are going, and to change that direction if we so choose.
There is also a sense of 'getting our groove back'...of reconnecting with the deeper spiritual meanings...what makes it all worth while. What are your motivations? What is it you love and are passionate about doing and believing?
Spring, March through June is the 8 of coins..."creative service". It will be a time of productivity, of DOing, of MAKING stuff. There is a feeling of rolling up our collective sleeves and 'gettin' 'er done" to paraphrase Larry the Cable Guy. It reminds me of that car commercial with the same sort of theme of craftsmanship and making things of quality. This seems to resonate with the murmurings of economic recovery in the news, both on a national level and that image of tech manufacturing locally.
Pens and Caps tied...
Lots of activity, energy and RENEWAL and freshness around spring...very much the energy of the season, but cleaner, crisper, and more vigorous than recent years.
Summer is The Emperor: the feeling is one of reassuming power...NOT power over others, NOT the country building, invade first and destroy things later policies from the recent past...but a REASSUMING of PERSONAL power....dignity, responsibility, honor, honesty, wisdom...both in an individual sense, and in a national sense. It feels like an usually wise leader that stepped off the throne to fight in a useless battle...but is now stopping, just stopping, and returning to his seat of power, and governing wisely instead of running a fools errand.
The autumn, September to the end of the year , is showing the 910 of cups has a feeling of completion, but not totally so...like the end of the beginning so to speak. Falling into routine, solidifying the renewal...like a new way of acting becomes routine, habit. It feels like that moment when a brand new house feels like HOME again. There is a feeling of comfort and simplicity, like a warm meal by a fireplace, or a hot cup of coffee after being out in the rain.
All of the card types are represented: major arcana, cups, coins, swords - except for the suite of wands. That resonates with the feeling that this will be more of an outward year, full of doing and recovery, more than introspection, once we get past that initial retrospective...the nostalgia will pass quickly, before Mardi Gras is my guess. That's when things will shift...maybe not that exact day, but around then. After all, lent and mardi gras is a Catholic thing, and not that meaningful to the rest of us. But around that Febuary-ish time.
We won! So did they! Game finished in a tie..classy really. It's the journey not the destination, it's playing the game more than...blah blah....I hope we win tomorrow. Hey...it's just a game, so no harm done with a little hometown bias ;)
And that is all that is coming through right now. It ends on a playful, fun, celebratory note...so I will leave you with that energy, and wish you all a happy, healthy, prosperous, fun, safe and peaceful New Year!

The Hermit
The Hermit fits some of my favorite popular images - ones that have a surprising sense of humor. Spirituality isn't all dullness and drudgery. Spirituality, tarot, psychic work has the same balance of humor and fun as life as a whole, the human spirit as a whole.
When I'm doing a reading and the Hermit card shows up, I like to draw from tv advertising. One of my favorites is the " lifesavors" ad from what was it..the 70s? A guy climbs a rocky, steep, isolated mountain to find the stereotypical hermit / guru / yogi sitting in meditation. He asks the guru 'what is the meaning of life?" The answer was, if memory serves, peppermint candy. He might be right. Being able to appreciate the fun and sweetness of life is a big part of that, certainly.
Or another fun one is for tea. A man askes a white-haired asian elder the difference between white tea and green tea...the older man says something obvious and walks away...nothing special.
But that is the nature of the Hermit card...wisdom in the bald-faced and practical. No special isolation is necessarily required. I love the graphic (found in a "public domain" search) of the guru with a laptop and a cellphone.
Quite often, the advice of the Hermit card is to find a quiet sanctuary within th environs at hand...to find our inner guru even while multi-tasking.
The balance point that helps us find our quiet spot, and inner wisdom...literally and figuratively...is the balance between observation and influence.
In Taoism, a sage is like a mirror, reflecting human nature back to the observer, advising what the inquirer already knows.
To find our inner sage, we just observe the mirror in a sense. We can't influence everything. We can't persuade everything to go our way. To find the wise way forward, often takes simple observation. Or more basically, we can't hear our inner guru if we are talking all the time. Self - insight and gaining wisdom is a silent pursuit. There are walking meditations, writing meditations, even focused mantras and chanting meditations, but not just-shooting-off-your-mouth meditations. Stop, look and listen is good advice for more than crossing the street.
It is the advice of the Hermit card. The card isn't saying to go find the mint eating or tea drinking isolated wise yogi type, or telling you to go into hiding...rather the advice is to find the quiet within, to be your own inner hermit, by observing, speaking after you know what to say, much as the isolated gurus of popular culture. We don't have to travel to a himelayan mountain top to find some quiet. Try turning off the tv and phone and meditating...even just a few minutes. Observe quietly anywhere, anytime, without speaking, and you become the quiet eye in the middle of the hurricane. Then you become the wise hermit.

Tarot reading: Four Seasons for America
People who write like to do just that...when you have a blog, sometimes it is hard not to rant and opine on any old thing that gets your hackles up.
I know I push the envelope when it comes to one of the two topics that inevitably lead to somebody getting disgruntled or annoyed to one extent or another. I 'go there' with religion. Won't do it with politics too, that's be nuts!
So I won't give my opinion of the mid-term elections in the U.S.
But I would like to experiment with this. I've heard of astrologers and the like who do readings for nations, and celebrities. While I personally think it is wrong to read someone without their direct consent, what about a collective group as large as a country? I don't know if it is even possible to do from a Tarot point of view, like it is in astrology. I've heard some astrologers cast charts etc based on the date that a city was incorporated or a business started.
So this is just experimental, no promises, just out of curiosity to see what cards turn up. Not to mention a dead giveaway of my political leanings. It might be more of that than an actual reading for the direction of the country-at-large...but hey, Tarot readers need to vent / rant / opine as much as any blogger, eh?
Winter...knight of cups...suffiency
"Enough"...a period of little change...no further slippage, but not prosperous either. Knight suggests action. It feels grassroots. The action is drawn from the everyman, to make do, to get by with nothing but inaction if not outright obstacles. Direction of the country caters to the few, while the rest show strength, resilience.
Spring...3 of swords...corruption
Corruption is recognized more, seen more, but not corrected
Summer...The Emperor...Illimitable Ability
Skilled leaders...not just one, but a small few...step in to re-set direction and effect a positive change that gives heart to the public that feels abandoned.
Fall...3 of cups...merriment...
A feeling of some hope and optimism returns. A feeling of relief as a crisis ends
3 and a second three...there is a feeling that March and June will be important shifts in energy.

What Goddess is Guiding Me?
Q. How do I know what Goddess is working with me right now?
A. I've heard of "goddess readings" and "angel readings" but it isn't something I do. Sometimes these readings use a special set of cards, with just names of angels from the western judeo-christian tradition on them, or a special set of Tarot cards with Goddesses from many traditions on them. Sometimes these kinds of readings work just like a psychic "cold" reading, where the psychic just gives the mental intuitive impression as they get them. Sometimes this includes the psychic identifying the angel or goddess, sometimes that is identified later based on the symbols given in the reading. Some goddesses have particular colors or images identified with them. As I understand it, Mary from the Christian tradition is associated with flowers, roses, the color blue.
If I were to be very off-the-cuff about this I would answer you simply with "Isis". As I read your e-mail there was a strong Egyptian image...a wall carving / painting of a woman kneeling and offering a light blue jar, like a perfume jar, something that fit in her hands easily. The energy is feminine, but the image isn't the winged one traditionally associated with Isis. The jar image brings to mind the jars associated with Asian Quan Yin statues...to symbolize the pouring out of compassion...but that doesn't feel right. The jar was light blue...quan yin's jar is often white, or the color of the statue's wood or metal. Quan Yin is associated with violet, and the energy here is definitly blue. There is also a strong image of an oval light blue stone set in a headband - gold rimmed with 'horns'...definitely an Egyptian style, perhaps a scarab sort of thing...turquoise or moonstone or feldspar...the shape is like the astrological symbol for taurus only with a stone set in the circle.
But that is why I don't limit my readings to "goddesses" or "angels". I believe that our spirit guides and teachers - whoever they are - show themselves to us in whatever form we learn from the best. If we need a 'goddess', and for whatever reason would resist learning from an Egyptian slave girl who has gained wisdom the hard way...then so it is. If you learn better from a female, than a male, then so it is also. We all have a story. We all have lessons to learn...and teach. I don't want to place limits on the lessons, help, and guidance. But that's just me. It took many years to even learn that spirit guides are possible, that hearing them is possible.
But if you want to learn more about working with Spirit Guides, I recommend Ted Andrews book on the subject.
Here is another suggestion: meditate. Just passively listen to the words, take in the images that come to mind, then let them go. After the meditation, jot down the words and images you remember. After a time, see if there are clues or patterns that might tell you about the guide or goddess or angel that is working with you.
Other key ideas are the compassion that exists with this kind of thing. Set your intent that the learning relationship be a loving supportive one for the highest and best. If something seems wrong, or harsh or judgemental...then something IS wrong. Seek help, ask for protection from higher entities...a true spirit guide or goddess would never frighten or hurt you.
Just some ideas for you to consider, offered in service for the highest and best...
P.S. I know there is no way to prove this, but I didn't find this image until after writing this post...the shape on her head is what I saw, except the circle was gem inlaid with blue instead of being reddish-orange, and separate from the kneeling girl image

daily meditation - 3 of cups
It is so easy to focus only on the thing causing you pain, and miss everything around it...focusing only on the thorn that pricked your finger, and missing the rose's fragrance.
So often we turn to Tarot, wanting an answer to one thing...career, romance, finances...and the answer is none of the above...
Career, family, romance...these are the crown jewels of life.
Sometimes with have to build and repair the crown before the jewels can be set. Sometimes you have to build the crown before the gemstones are found.
Wishing you both a beautiful crown, and gemstones here and to come.

Halloween Romance Reading
Everyone wants to know about romance at Valentine's Day, the winter holidays, New Years...
A question about romance this time of year caught my attention. Reminded me a little of one of my favorite movies, "The Crow"...the original from 1994 with Brandon Lee.
In "Animal Wise Tarot" Ted Andrews associates the crow with unexpected magic.
The meditation card I drew about the subject was the Sun from the major arcana.
My sense of it is this:
The sun is stability. Romance is steady now, and not the place for change, energy or upheaval. Let the relationship be as it is, appreciate it, see the good in it as it is.
The word "cascade" comes to mind. The crow speaks of magic, but it is clearly, now, a magic of self.
In short, be the best person you can be. The magic of this time is the magic of loving self, improving self, learning , growing, personal spirituality, our individual connection with the magical and spiritual aspects of life and the universe.
If you are the highest and best YOU, if you are the sincerest, most genuine YOU that you can be, that will cascade into relationships at a later time.
If you are in a relationship now, be your genuine spiritual self...it will transform the relationship you are in. It will help you do your part to make the relationship as it is meant to be.
If you are alone now, that personal power, spirituality, compassion, genuineness - it will all shine out like a beacon to draw love and companionship to you.

Onions, Ogres and Tarot
I like Shrek.
It was a fun movie. One of my favorite parts was where Shrek was telling Donkey that "Ogres are like onions"...not stinky, but they have "layers, donkey, they have layers"
Tarot cards are like that too. There are dozens of reference books telling different "meanings" for the cards. While most follow a theme, there are subtle differences.
And now way to know which definition to use. That's part of the intuition bit of Tarot reading. It isn't like reading a book. The obvious 'meaning' isn't always the right one. Part of reading cards is reading the language of spirit and intuition, and knowing when to ignore the obvious. If it was all-obvious all the time, then we wouldn't need intuition or 'psychics' now would we?
Sometimes layers add to depth, complexity and richness. Sometimes they just ad to confusion.
So here is how I cook the tarot onion so to speak.
Shop around...read lots of resources. Then pick the one you 'resonate' with. When we psychics use the term 'resonate' we mean 'vibe with' ...
In other words, pick the reference that seems comfortable, natural, and TRUE to you...no matter what other books or other readers say. The value of the psychic landscape isn't some ultimate 'truth' where there is one and only one way to understand things. It is slipperier than that...it is relative, it's Einstein, not Pythagoras. It's multidimensional. By adding different viewpoints, we get a deeper richer image, like a ct scan rather than the one dimensional read of an x-ray.
So be true to your own understanding....add your own unique view.
Once you find your top reference...use it. Write your favorite meaning on your cards even, if they don't already have one. or add to it even if it does. Tarot cards are just bits of cardboard. The sacred magic part is in YOU so writing on the cards does no harm.
Sometimes when doing or getting a reading, you will get a feeling of "wrongness" . You'll get that gut feeling that the card is trying to tell you something else.
Then go to your second favorite book or another meaning from the list your book gives. Over time, most cards have multiple meanings...so most books give lists of words or at least a few paragraphs talking about the various aspects of a card.
Worse comes to worse, just keep reading and researching a card meanings until the light bulb goes off and you find the meaning that feels so right, you know it has to be the right one!
So if you come across a card in a reading (whether you are giving or getting the reading) that just doesn't feel right...keep peeling the onion. Intuition will lead you to the layer that is right for you.
