Q&A: My Girlfriend Left Me. Where do I go from here?
Q:After 5 years, my girlfriend left me a few months ago. I gave so much to someone who just didn't feel the same way. What is next? Where do I go from here?
A: I'm sorry to hear about what happened. It feels like you did everything you possibly could to make things work, so you can move on with no regrets, certainly. Your question is perfect for a classic "pathway" style reading...one card for lessons from the past that can help you now, one card to show ideas for dealing with the situation you are in now, and a third to show a good path forward.
General impressions:
These cards carry a lot of energy...this experience is a real pivot-point for you. This is an important time and an important lesson. Please take care to learn and grow all you can, or this kind of experience will repeat until you learn what is needed.
Keep in mind as we move forward to the individual cards that the images are concepts, ideas and symbols...they do NOT predict the future. How things unfold are up to you based on what you do and decide. Also keep in mind that the Tarot cards are very old...they came to be in the 1200s, so you have to put them into today's context too.
The first card is Death in reverse (upside down)...This isn't the distant past, but more about the very recent past, meaning the break-up with this girl in June. The death card is not literal...it talks about a life altering change. It does give you that caution I spoke of earlier...that this could repeat if care is not taken to learn from this, grow from this. It also is a message of hope...death, especially if it is reversed, speaks of re-birth...heaven, reincarnation and all that. This card strongly reminds you that this is a new beginning, a new phase of life, a new beginning, a fresh start for you. It is a chance to find real happiness this time. It is a new chance, a new beginning, a new day for you. Embrace it, and allow that to make you happy, not to get stuck in the past and what happened, which is another part of the message for you...the past is gone, essentially it is dead. Lesson learned, allow it to go, move on to something better.
The next card reassures you that something better is indeed possible...the next card is the 10 of coins, which means truth and happiness. The feeling here is "now you know". You can look for someone who returns the feelings and effort you give. Now you know more about what you hope to have in a relationship. I also get the mental image of a candle and the message "let your light glow". Be your genuine and true self...Don't try to fit other's expectations or bend them to yours either one...be who you are, love who you are, love others as they are. When you live from a position of love, like attracts like. If you are caring and genuine and honest, that will attract that honesty, and you both will know sooner if things are going well or not. The part about loving yourself is important too. Being honest with yourself that it isn't right is just as important as giving your best effort to a relationship. A teacher of mine always reminded us to think of what serves the loving highest and best. Is the loving thing to continue on in denial of what you feel, or to honor what you feel and move on? In any case, truth and happiness are there for you if you open to the possibilities.
The last card is the Devil...don't be frightened by it. In your case the message is like that old saying "give the devil his due". Acknowledge mistakes that were made before...admit the problems from the last relationship so you can let them go. If the mistakes were hers, then admit that, allow that you put up with too much for too long...and then you can move on to brighter days. If you had a part in things not working out...admit that too. Then change it next time. This whole situation feels more like a gift of a new chance, more than a loss.
Often I will end with a 'cold reading' portion with any final impressions, that might go with the cards or not. All I get here is the image of a magnifying glass, and the energy ends. It feels as if we are being told the message has been given...give full focus and attention to what has already been said.

Geek Girl's Bookshelf - A Reckless Witch
If you've read this blog before, no doubt you heard me talk about wholeness, how everything is a connected one-ness and all that. Tarot readings don't happen in a vacuum.
So while "Geek Girl's Bookshelf" and book reviews might seem off-topic, it really isn't. Book reviews are a dime a dozen here in the blog-o-sphere, especially for current bestsellers and popular topics. What I'd like to do is share my bookshelf with you - - the whole odd, eclectic, fringe-ish mish-mash that has influenced my tarot philosophy and, in turn, this blog.
Today I'm totally geeked out over "A Reckless Witch", the third book in the "Modern Witch" series by Debora Geary. Like the first two books, this one is just pure fun.
On one level, this series rouses a little bit of nostalgia. It reminds me a little of the action-adventure kinds of books I read as a kid: Trixie Belden, Nancy Drew, the Hardy Boys - that sort of thing. But this is fun for grown-ups. It takes that innocent enjoyment and blends it with abstract concepts that requires adulthood to really appreciate and treasure. Love, compassion, family, parenthood, personal responsibility, nurturing, maturity and more are all woven into the story right next to the harry-potter-for-grown-up-girls surface story.
On a whole, there is much more to this book and this series than pulp fiction, paperback romance for soccer moms that I originally feared it might be. I'm glad I read it anyway. Ironically, it was because of the cool cover.
"A Reckless Witch" in particular gives us grown-up-girls a good reminder to play...just like the recent post about "the fool / the innocent" card. There is a great scene in the book with floating red glitter that is a perfect example of healthy play. In fact, that exact theme of balancing fun and responsibility is central to the story...and central to why any stressed out working adult needs to kick their feet up and read this book!
One word to any science geeks who might read "A Reckless Witch" with too much of a detail-critical eye. Yeah - I know that if you coat yourself with negative ions you will attract the positively charged magical floating glitter and not repel it...but did I mention it's magical floating glittler? Sometimes cool trumps accurate. This is one of those times. Relax.
In addition to a fun romp of a story, threaded together with subtle but important ideas, Debora Geary creates very realistic, engaging, comfortable, almost familiar characters. Who hasn't coped with life through cookies and ice cream at one time or another? Who doesn't have favorite sofa or seat? I don't know if older Irish women talk the way Moira does or not...but I don't care because she is such a wise, sweetheart of a character. After teaching pre-school martial arts and seeing the mini-maestros at my daughter's violin class...I KNOW there are Aervyn-like 4 year olds out there. Maybe it is because the themes and subject matter is right in my wheelhouse, but reading these books have been like meeting a whole house full of like minded friends.
Then there is the magic. Her approach to it is enlightened. It may be fiction, but it hints at certain real truths, as I see it anyway.
Even if "A Reckless Witch" just reminds us to balance responsibility and fun, it has worked a little modern magic.

Today's Tarot - 9 of coins: Truth Inside and Out
People have debated what is truth for as long as there have been people.
One meaning for the 9 of coins is "truth". It is a big concept for anyone, and big symbolism for any card. I've always wondered why it was associated with a minor arcana card instead of being assigned to a major arcana card. In some interpretation systems, maybe it is.
But after I think about it, it seems more appropriate to have "truth" be in the minor arcana. Too often we give the source of Truth over to other sources, and our personal power right along with it. We think of truth as being only in thoughts and things outside of ourselves. The truth outside of us is only half of the story. We are part of the whole of the universe. We are part of the all-that-is...so we are part of the truths that are "out there". As part of it, we have the ability to recognize truth as reliably and easily as we recognize ourselves in a mirror. Recognizing your inner knowing and honoring your ability to know truth is liberating.
Truth doesn't have to come from a major arcana card. It doesn't have to come from any card, any philosophy, or any position of authority at all. The greatest truths are the ones we experience for ourselves.

Last Night's Sunset
I watched the sunset last night.
It was a pretty sunset,
Scoop of sherbet in the western sky.
I don't know if anyone else felt it,
Warm, happy and content.
I hoped they did, but then,
The Sun doesn't care.
No matter who watches, or not,
What we think, feel or believe,
The Sun still shines warm.
It is enough that truth and beauty exists.

Today's Tarot - 8 of wands
The 8 of wands is one of my favorite cards. Why? Because it thinks like I do. Who doesn't like vibe-ing with like minds. "Birds of a feather flock together" and all that. The 8 of wands is one of my favorite feathers.
In western terms it is a card of "infinity" or "gestalt"...the biggest of big pictures. In eastern philosophy terms, it is the card of "ten thousand things"...infinite potential.
I don't know how common it is, but I'm hard-wired to like the big picture. The more I see of it, the happier I am.
Remember that old Madonna lyric..."truth is where you find it"? In my experience, especially working with Tarot and Intuition, this is very true. There are reflections, shadows, and echos of truth and inspiration all around if we are open to it. The same idea can come in a lot of different formats. We might be closed to the idea in one form, but it can be a game-changer for us in another form. Great-grandma might need to hear a church sermon to find inspiration, while a teenager might need to hear it in a rock song on the radio...or vice versa, who knows? Good ideas are woven all through the fabric of life. It is just a matter of finding the thread that works for you.
mprobable, maybe, but possible, yes. It might just take an adjustment in view to see the way there. It might just take a little dose of "big picture" thinking.And so it is with the 8 of wands. One example of the 8 of wands "gestalt" and "potential" meanings is googlemaps. Focus in too close, and you might miss your destination. But if you zoom out a little, things fall into better perspective. Underneath it all, you have a huge potential, a whole world of things to find and see, almost. Click the right links, and you can see the moon. 8 of wands reminds us of the same ability within our personal point of view. If we get too caught up in the narrow view, the little nit-picky details (don't get me wrong...attention to detail is needed, I'm talking about imbalance and excess here). If our point of view becomes to narrow and in-close, we can lose the forest in the trees. When that happens, it is very easy to become overwhelmed by our situation. The cure...the balancer...is to pull back, zoom out, and look for the bigger picture. Remember anything is possible...even if it takes a lot of work and a little luck. I

Today's Tarot - Ace of Swords
Socrates is credited with saying "The unexamined life is not worth living". I'm guessing it was sometime shortly before he said "I drank what?"
The Ace of Swords hints at this same idea, only in a less morbid way.
What is so great about the "examined" life that Socrates would rather order a vente hemlock-latte than leave well enough alone?
What is the down side of not thinking about life? Isn't ignorance supposed to be bliss?
In a way it is. But how many people in modern America can live a life of being "in the here-and-now", being content with things exactly as they are. Very few, is my guess. It just isn't in our can-do, inventive nature.
On the other hand, there is such a thing as 'knowing just enough to be dangerous'. The risk lies in the shallow waters, in a vapid, pale, thoughtless, existence somewhere in-between "here-and-now" and personal growth. Today's card cautions us against wandering through life with eyes wide shut.
Examining life, trying to be a better person, and looking for the kind of spiritual awakening that the Ace of Swords symbolizes is a gift to yourself and everyone around you. You get a deeper, more colorful, more meaningful life. Everyone around you benefits from your example and your general trail-blazing. You don't have to be all-knowing, super-wise, special or amazing, like a guru on a mountain somewhere. Like the TV ad for a mentoring program says...you just have to BE there. Just walk your talk, find what is meaningful to you. It doesn't matter so much what truth you find. What matters is that you look for it in the first place. Taking the journey of awakening raises the energy around you and makes the world a better place.
Ironically, once a person decides to to in the direction indicated by the Ace of Swords...once they allow the awakening...often they end up right back at that "here and now" sort of contentment. The Ace of Swords may send you in a circle, but it is a journey well worth taking.

Starseeds and Seeds of Truth
Some things are too "fringe" even for me.
A friend sent a link to a website...we both like creative paintings and art, and she wanted to bring a particularly nice graphic to my attention. It was very good. But for once, the visual is beside the point.
The graphic was on a website that was all about "star seeds" and indigo children. I'm not here to say whether those ideas are true or not. I don't know. All I know is that it doesn't quite resonate with me. Something's a half bubble off, but I can't quite put my finger on just what it is. There is a part of me that wants to be an "indigo" or a "starseed". I've always had an interest in science, space and astronomy. Blame it on mom...she uncharacteristically (thank goodness) let me get up to see the moon landing when I was 4. I was hooked. I wheedled, whined and sneaked (the night launches) to see every Apollo launch and landing possible after that. After putting my own little one on the school bus, beat a path to the tv to watch the Endeavor launch.
Speaking of tv...I'm a huge Mythbusters fan...back to that seemingly random statement in a minute.
One of the characteristics of a "star child" according to this website is a fascination with space and astronomy. Well, I have that one covered. Still, the whole indigo children / star child thing doesn't seem a 100% on target.
I've always loved the constellation Orion, and take great comfort in seeing it somehow. Was talking about this same topic with one of my like-minded soul-sisters one time. We picked a star to be "from", with the idea that our first impulse might hold some grain of truth, might be some clue. She picked the Pleiades. I picked Rigel from the Orion constellation. What that means, if anything, I've yet to figure out. I think it means I like the Orion constellation. Had to laugh at some of the people on the website claiming to be FROM Orion. That is the name of a pattern of stars as they appear from Earth. They are actually quite distant in 3 dimensional space, and if you got far enough away from earth, the pattern, thus "Orion" disappears and becomes meaningless.
Strike two for the star seeds.
Another thing from the "are you a star seed" list of questions is having a feeling that all religions are missing something. Amen to that.
A-HA! There are the dots to connect. Religions and star seeds...no one religion has all the truth. Neither does this "star seed" "indigo children" construct. All religions have some granule of truth or benefit or they wouldn't survive the test of time. "New age" beliefs share some traits like that with orthodox 'religion', in function, if not in form.
Human nature is rich in dichotomies. We are social and need to belong, yet we need to think of ourselves as unique and special. Religions and belief groups meet both of those needs. It seems to me that part of the impetus for religious participation and the interest in 'star seeds' and 'indigo children' is a need for specialness while being part of a tribe. The balance of those two seemingly opposing needs is different for each person...some are driven primarily by the rules and expectations of their 'tribe', as with religious fundamentalist. Others are more 'lone wolf'...but still take pleasure in meeting those of like mind and equal independence. But the seeds within each, the core grains of truth are the same for both motifs.
That's where the Mythbusters reference comes in. Their experimentation often finds the "grain of truth behind the myth".
This dual need of human nature is one of those grains that show how much old religion and 'new age' really are alike...and should be taken with the same grain. Of salt that is.
At the same time, as much as religion and 'new age' arouse our skeptical instincts, there is another grain of truth to been here.
Let's change the TV channel again...from the moon landing to Mythbusters, now back to Carl Sagan's Cosmos.
The "Starseeds" are expressing in intuitive/spiritual terms what Dr. Sagan expressed in literal, logical, scientific terms. "We are all star stuff".
The atoms that make up our bodies...the iron, calcium, carbon, all of it...those literal atoms were literally created in the hearts of distant and ancient stars. We are all literally thinking, feeling, communicating expressions of the cosmos...the stars. We are deeply connected to ALL that is, every place, every dimension, every time. We are ALL children of the stars, literally and symbolically. That is the breathtaking beauty behind the scientific phrase "time-space continuum". That is the spiritual common ground between the new and the orthodox, the fringe and the fundamental.
"We are all star stuff"...we are all special and unique in the most connected and egalitarian way possible.
And in so being, in being both special and one, we echo the stars that bore us, and the cosmos in which both we and the stars exist.

Truth in Fiction part 1
I forget the exact phrase...he may have been quoting something even older, I don't know...but saw an interview with the author Richard Clarke, when "Scorpion's Gate" was released. (Good book btw...fun read) Having written non-fiction before, he was asked why he wrote a fiction novel...his reply was the adage about how you can tell more truth through fiction than you can through nonfiction, basically.
That's true for psychic work too, in my experience.
Remember how Alice from Twilight was a good example of how "predictions" work, the power of choice and so on...
Remember how I said sports predictions are just for fun, kicks and grins...entertainment, just like sports are entertainment? Well, outside of the Steelers Nation they are...here, this is serious.
You know how children learn through play...same is true of psychics. We learn through play, and can speak truth through fiction.
Today's play and potential fiction is ...drum roll please...a yes/no reading for the AFC championship this weekend.
I don't remember if it was something I posted, or just chatter among my fellow citizens of da nation, but someone asked my prediction for the Steelers and the superbowl back at New Years, when I blogged those 'predictions'. Anyway, the impression I got was that the only real obsticals to the Super Bowl for the Steelers would be a team in either dark blue or dark green jerseys. That was before the season ended.
Like I should talk...I don't even know when the Super Bowl IS this year. (Did I mention I'm a hockey fan...GO PENS!). What color ARE the Jets away jerseys anyway?
To be honest, I was trying to make myself believe they are dark green and trying to flog up some pessimism about this weekend's game just to make myself think I'd made a good "prediction" then.
Can't do it. I wish I could sit here and say "I have a bad feeling about this, Luke". "I told you about those jerseys" "It doesn't look good" But it just doesn't feel that way, no matter what color shirts they wear for the game. There is an feeling of optimism that wasn't there three weeks ago.
It isn't a lock, by any means. As I imagine the two team logos, they go back and forth in which is brighter and larger. When the Steelers logo moves forward there is a dotted line leading to Super Bowl trophy (whatever they call it). When the Jets logo moves forward...there is a dotted line leading left out of the vision, away from that logo to something unseen.
See what I mean about so-called predictions and how they can change?
See? Fiction does tell truth...Alice was right, change the intent / choice, change the 'vision'. Yoda was right..."difficult to see. Always in motion is the future".
I still see the Jets as a bigger challenge than some may think. If the Steelers get an iota complacent, it could torpedo the whole thing. But what I 'see' is if the Steelers win the championship, they have a better than average change of winning the whole thing (Seven-burgh? One for the big toe?) But if the Jets win, I don't feel so optimistic for them
Ok, let's suck it up for a minute and go all 'miss cleo' on this and give my fakey so-called prediction: If the Steelers win the AFC, they win the Super Bowl. If the Jets win the AFC, they lose the Super Bowl.
Believe me, that is pure intuition since I have no freaking clue whatsoever who is even playing in the NFC....GO PENS!
The three card reading bears that out a bit "will the Steelers win the AFC championship in January 2011?...."maybe, leaning yes"
Will the Steelers win the 2011 Super Bowl...."maybe, leaning yes"
It's all still up in the air. And did I mention? - GO PENS!
Actually good luck to the Steelers, may the best team win. (And everyone in Pittsburgh knows who THAT is ;)
