Q: Hello. The reading we did last year turned out to be right on target, so I wanted to talk to you again. It isn't good news. It turns out I will need more schooling to get the job I want, but the couple of applications I've put in have been rejected. Six months ago, I connected with an old friend, and we started dating. I really care for her, and thought she was my true soul mate. Then a month ago she stopped talking to me. I don't know what happened, but can you tell me if we will hook back up or have any future together? With both of these things together, I'm starting to feel really discouraged and am losing hope. What is your advice?

I'm so glad you found our last reading together to be helpful.

I'm sure you understand that there is no way to predict if you and your friend will get back together. Tarot can not read her heart, mind or intentions. She is as much a part of this as you are. The only way to know why things have changed and what she wants is to talk to her directly if possible. If she won't talk with you, then there is no choice but to respect that and move on. Who knows? This might be an opening to meet someone new who truly is your soulmate. Keep hope, keep the light in your heart. The best way to attract your perfect soulmate into your life is to be your truest self. To bring love, give love...be a kind, bright person and your soulmate will come to that light, whoever she may be.

I'm sorry to hear that there have been so many set-backs getting into school, too.

My hunch is the best thing right now is a "mediation" reading. Let's stay focused...the card will give you and idea. It is something to ponder, and it might show you the way forward. My hunch is it will be a career focused card, since the relationship is at a point that needs real-world conversation more than tarot guidance.

After three shuffles, your card is "Justice" from the major arcana portion of the tarot deck.

Being a major arcana card, it feels as if energy and change is just on the horizon. It does feel more career connected. Perhaps with little going on in the romance department, now is the time to put your energy all into career and education. It takes a LOT of time and energy to work and go to school at the same time if that is how things need to be. Don't forget, two things...1. Persistence pays off. There is a saying "fake it until you make it"...keep going, keep applying, keep looking, don't lose hope. It does feel as if energy and change and movement is on the horizon for you. And 2. It may be part of the learning / growing process that helps you become the perfect soulmate for your ultimate mate. This time of trial may the process that helps make you into the person you want to be...and that your soulmate wants to be with.

The justice card means "wisdom"...wisdom is made up of heart and mind, logic and intuition, all working together. Also there is a sense of "find wisdom". Although there are other cards more specific to this, it feels like this card is calling in that energy of finding a mentor. Is there someone who you can turn to for advice, guidance, a referral, or anything else to help you along with academics or career? Is there one of the schools that would be willing to talk to you to say why they rejected the application and what you can do to get a better outcome later or on other applications? Do you have access to any career counseling or any how-to information about applying to schools? Are there online resources that can help??

Hang in there...I hope the positive energy really turns out as nice for you as this card seems to say. It really does feel like good stuff is there for you, as long as you don't give up. Please keep trying...it feels as if it will pay off in the long run. It usually does.

Q&A: Jealousy

Q: I have a pattern of always being jealous of my boyfriends. Every time they are away from me, I worry they will cheat on me, so I call off the relationship after a few weeks. Now I am seeing a good guy. He has issues with old relationships too, so we've decided to go slow. It has only been a few weeks, but I've already tried to break if it off once, but we patched things up pretty quickly. Will I always be jealous? Is this the relationship for me? Should I break it off before my jealousy ruins things again?

A: This calls for a one-card meditation, and your card is the Chariot from the major arcana. Major arcana cards resonate with big life-lesson issues like this. The Chariot specifically about awareness. You have made strides in self-awareness. Now lets turn that awareness to the relationship and the things around you to help you move forward.

There is an old saying that the first step in avoiding a trap is knowing of its existence. By gaining the insight you have into your issues, triggers, and sensitivities, you've already won half the battle.

Another old adage that applies here is "don't throw the baby out with the bathwater" 

You are right, it is tied up with anger and resentment. Jealousy is also a matter fear and of trust...the lack of trust, really. Why is it you don't trust men? Have these past relationships really and truly given you cause to be jealous? Was there really a reason to bail out? If so, why are you choosing the kind of guy that isn't trustworthy? Are you being defensive or paranoid because of past hurts, and want to hurt the relationship before the relationship hurts you? Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater by destroying something potentially good just because of what you've done before or what has been done to you...either one.

Also, take a good look at the relationship you are in right now. Forget the jealousy, forget the past, forget the future...right here, right now, the way things ARE...do you care about this person? Do you want to spend more time with him? Is this a person you trust? Have you been honest with him? Has he been honest with you? If you trust him and face your fears, then there is no place for jealousy to take root.

If you care about him, and want this to work, then the ball is in your court. It is up to you to decide if you want to be a jealous person for no tangible reason or not. You have to decide if any 'reasons' you find are your old habits coloring the way you see things. Only you can decide if you are willing to do let go of the past, your old ways of doing things, and accept this man for who he is right here, right now. You have to be the one to decide if you are willing to start here, care for this person as-is, uncolored by past experiences or not.

It takes courage to drive a chariot. It takes awareness and realistic decision making. Charioteers were the jet test pilots of their day. It takes the same kind of courage to be honest with yourself, be honest about the way things are, and make decisions about what you have and how to move forward. Don't use your past as an excuse...a fast moving chariot can not focus on where they have been or they drive up the tree that is in front of them. A fast moving chariot can't imagine bumps and curves in the road that aren't really there...or they will tip over.  Chariots don't turn on a dime...so it takes communication with the chariots beside you, or accidents happen. Relationships and chariots both require realistic awareness, thorough honesty, and clear communication.

Judgment: getting results from your consequences

This is where reading tarot cards gets tricky. Tarot, tea leaves, palm lines, just plain psychic impressions: all intuitive tools are conceptual and symbolic. Intuition-helpers are idea and image driven.


The hard part is putting those pure ideas and images into words. Language can be both powerful, and subtle. Words can have a variety of meanings and connotations. "Judgement" is a good example.


Judgement can mean reason, good decision-making, as in "use good judgement" or "an error in judgement". This is the softer side of the word, alluding to making a healthy, logical way through many options.


In the tarot cards, the major arcana card "Judgement" is associated with a slightly harsher, harder connotation of the word. Here "judgement" speaks more to the idea of authoritarian pronouncement, like "passing judgement" or "being judgmental".


To move tarot readings from the era of a flat Earth into the era of quantum physics, we need to move the connotations of this card from hard to soft, from authoritarian judgmentalism to individual reason and good judgement.


One interpretation of this card is "consequences and renewal" (Diane Morgan). This interpretation, I think, captures the best of old and new.
Consequences is still used in a punitive way in our language. We often talk of the "consequences" when rules are broken...the authoritative pronouncement.
Consequences can have multiple shades of meaning. One is "result" or "outcome". Sure, breaking rules results in punishment. But too, any cause results in an effect. That effect can be - you guessed it - judged to be either good or bad.


Put the Judgement major arcana card into modern language and might get this:  Use your head (judgement)and learn from what happens (cause and effect/consequences) to learn from the experience and do better next time (renewal).

The World card is a hopeful, encouraging end to the major arcana. It speaks of career success, happiness, love, abundance. It hints at an ability to touch infinity, and draw what we need into our lives in an insightful, productive way.


This card is part of the major arcana because it also carries some potent reminders about success. Sometimes there are costs, balances that must be struck. Sometimes that balance is carried on the back of perception. Success comes and goes in an eyeblink when we shift our perception of our life and of the world around us.

Today's Tarot - Judgement

The Judgement card has many meanings associated with it. The Tarot deck evolved in Medieval Europe, so this card has many images and ideas drawn from the Christian notion of "Judgement Day". I'm not at all comfortable with any of those, which to my mind ring of bigotry and judgementalism rather than wisdom, reason or good judgement. I much prefer the more modern, universal, egalitarian conceptualization of it as "consequences and renewal".


Today, the consequences part is what jumps to the forefront. Not in a punitive way, but more in a cause-and-effect way. The things we do and say have consequences...to others and to the way our future unfolds.


There is a feeling of "advice" around the card today. The advice is to see things as they are before rushing to judgment. Nothing clouds reason and intuition, both, quite like heavy expectations.


It is a little less stressful that way too. It lifts two burdens from you, at least for a moment, when you look at things with that clear, Zen, as-they-are frame of mind. You spare yourself from making a decision, a judgement just at that moment. Plus you spare yourself from the weight of expectation. Taking a moment to see things as-they-are and here-and-now frees you from both the expectations formed by the past and worries about the future. Even if that frame of mind only lasts a moment, at least it is a peaceful moment.

Today's Tarot - Hanged Man

The Tarot deck is larger than the modern game-playing card deck. There are two divisions to the tarot deck - the major arcana, and the minor arcana. The word arcana is now mostly associated with the Tarot deck, but, as dictionaries will tell you, it comes from the Latin word arcanum, which just means "secret". So the major arcana of the tarot deck symbolizes the major 'secrets' to life (you know, like 'beauty secrets', top tips, advice, etc.) and the minor arcana symbolizes the more day-to-day kind of hints and tips.

This card is from the major arcana. I think much of what the major arcana teaches is predicated on the idea of balance.

Here the balance point has to do with challenges. The classic interpretation of the Hanged Man is related to "stagnation" or being stuck in the mud. But like I've said before..."one man's stuck in the mud is another man's day at the spa".

If you feel the message of the Hanged Man is for you today, the message could be one of two things. It could be a hint that you are stuck in a rut, too complacent, and the advice is to challenge yourself a little bit. Shake things up in a positive way...learn something, exercise a little extra, recapture something from the past that was good for you before, call an old friend, make a new one...you get the idea.

The other message the Hanged Man can hold is that when life gets too challenging for too long, we can become burned-out, drained, "hung out to dry" (to borrow from the card's imagry). If that is the case the advice becomes a reminder that it is ok to rest and "hang out" for a while. Don't stay so long that you become stagnated and the situation flips to the opposite. (Here is where the Tarot reflects a little bit of the yin-yang theory from the orient...anything taken to the extreme can become its opposite). But if you are over-stressed, the Hanged Man reminds us to balance activity and rest...progress and stagnation...challenging ourselves and being a little more gentle with self-expectations.
