We stand on the shoulders of giants. The million little how-tos we've learned that make up the fabric of daily life all had to come from somewhere, from how to make your bed to the grandest bit of philosophy.
Sometimes we are the giant. We build on what we've learned before. Sometimes we re-discover things that worked, but we've let slide.
It is up to us to choose good giants. We each choose the advice we take, and the ideas we reject. Mentors and examples are there for us. In this age of tv, book, internet and more...ideas and advice are easier to find than ever.
Paradoxically, the need to find good giants is greater than ever. It is easy to find advice, mentors and teachers. More guidance is available than ever before...but that isn't to say it is of any good quality. Guidance is easy to find. Choosing what what advice to take...and not...is a vital skill for everyone. Choose wisely and find a good giant...and you will reach higher than you dreamed possible.
It's getting to be that time of year.
Sure we are still thinking of warm weather, sun, fun, and Labor Day barbeque. At the same time farmers markets are overflowing with good things. The seeds that were planted in spring and allowed to grow over summer are coming to fruition...literally and figuratively. There is still some summer left, but harvest has begun.
The 7 of coins is often read as "reaping harvest". Many times this read in terms of "you reap what you sow"...cause and effect, chickens coming home to roost, that sort of connotation.
As with all the cards, there are other shades of meaning here too.
Today there is a feeling of "of course" or "naturally" there is a harvest. It is the way of Nature, the way things work. The world provides for us, naturally, effortlessly. So what is our role in the harvest?
First is to care for it. To preserve the good things that come. To take care of the environment that provides the harvest so generously. Second, perhaps as important, is to be grateful. It is no accident that the Thanksgiving holiday comes at the end of the harvest.
Being grateful for a beautiful day in the 'Burgh and wishing you a day of abundance & appreciation too.
The Hermit: The better you are at what you do, the less you have to tell people how great you are. Competence quiets. Owls are superior hunters, but they fly silent. Their silence is the source of that night-hunting excellence. There is interesting symbolism in that. Listening, observing, and quiet competence are powerful tools.
4 of coins - simple pleasures are life's secret treasures.
Happy Lammas to those who celebrate it. There is an energy of prosperity, harvest, hearth and handcrafting about today.
Just a quick reminder...I'll be on "blogcation" next week and there might be some delays in scheduling and e-mail readings. Thanks for being patient, and I'll be in touch ASAP on the 15th.
Thanks

In honor of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2 (one of the best book series ever, for readers of almost any age) opening at midnight and as a nod to the magician's convention in Pittsburgh this weekend....
The Magician...
A magician's real power is in seeing potential, setting intention, and finding the wonderful, even in the most mundane things.
Queen of coins: represents power, control, risk and loss.
You can not lose something that you never really had in the beginning. Controlling others is illusion. Controlling self is empowering.
9 of coins symbolizes "truth".
What harm can it do to be your true self?
Authenticity is honesty.
The Empress on the card would love this morning in "Birdland". Who wouldn't? The sun is shining, the temperature cooled overnight, birds are singing, and the coffee is ready.
The Empress card is associated with "nature and beauty". There is a very drapey-flowey, lacey, ultra-feminine side to the card - it reminds me a little of that phrase from Judy Tenuda's stand-up routine in the early 90s. Luckily, it isn't all "petite flower giver-goddess". The Empress also has a a very down-to-earth, no drama side too. That's the side that comes to mind today.
"Nothing fancy" is the feel. You don't have to go somewhere exotic to experience the touch of Nature. People and the cities, crime and pollution they create are part of nature, a part of the universal-everything (though not necessarily a good part).
Nature is just as much present in the little park up the street as it is in the wilderness. It is as much in a Pittsburgh rain storm as it is in the rainforest. Nature is in a goldfish bowl as much as in the ocean, and in a potted plant on the windowsill as much as in the mountains.
The beauty of Nature is right there in your next breath.
Wishing you day of full of life, beauty and nature close at hand.
9 of cups: We are all "psychic". Sometimes "psychic" comes with its sleeves rolled up and dressed for work. Then we call it "insight". Insight is a package deal, with knowledge, wisdom, psychic intuition, and practical experience all rolled into one.
Wishing you insight whenever it is most needed.
Don't limit your learning. Guidance can come in many forms: friend, mentor, sychronicities, spirit, intuition, and your own inexplicable inner knowing.
