Today's Tarot - The Wheel

The Wheel: Change is life's glass of water. It is full or empty, good or bad, hopeful or fearful depending on how you look at it.

Cave man club or frying pan?

Messages from the universe are a wonderful thing.

Was talking earlier today with a friend of mine who does tarot readings and reiki too (she's also a fellow Browncoat and Whovian...was total destiny that we end up communicating)

Everyone has times of doubt and uncertainty. Even healers as skilled as she is. It seems we all need a little guidance and encouragement. Sometimes I wish the universe would tell me if it is handing me a caveman club, to just keep bashing away, and the persistence will pay off - or if it is handing me a frying pan up side the head to give me a clue to do something different. It is a tricky thing to sort out, those cave man clubs and frying pans.

One answer, especially for us who DO readings is to GET a reading. Two heads are better than one...two eyes, each with a slightly different point of view two dimensions, can be integrated to form a 3-dimensional view that is better than either one alone.

The whole thing reminded me of that rusty trusty oldie but a goodie "Parallax" from 2010.  When I signed on today, my idea was to re-post it. Lo and behold...I sign on to dashboard, and someone else had found and viewed "Parallax" since yesterday.

The Sun - Winter Solstice

It isn't the first thing that comes to mind on a cloudy cold cookie-baking kind of December day, but the Sun has every association with the winter solstice. SOLstice. Without the sun, there wouldn't be one.

Solstice, technically, is when the sun stops or holds still....that what solstice is. Because of the tilt of the Earth as it goes around the sun, sunrise and sunset seem to drift north and south on the horizon. At the beginning of Summer and Winter, this 'drift' pauses ... is at solstice...before starting to go the other way. We are taking a pause before the sun comes north again. From here to June, the days get longer again...the sun grows.

Pagan Yule celebrates the birth of the Sun-god at the solstice. I've seen pictures of lebkuchen (spice cookie, "life cookie") molds with sun motifs.  More sun for today.

One legend is that the Christ legend was assigned to this time of year as a way to c0-op the pagan traditions and make conversions. I don't know enough about comparative religion and anthropology to go there, but no matter what middle-eastern town they appear over, stars are suns, the sun is a star....so we're all one big happy galaxy,yes? But that still gives a sun-association to the holiday season.

The Sun is a great card for today. It is about hope and positivity and light and security and all the things we associate with this time of year.

May the sun warm your Solstice day, no matter what your weather may be.

It seems odd to talk about change in a time of tradition like this.

Yet it fits. Nothing is as inevitable and inexorable as change. It is more fundamental to the universe than any holiday tradition. It is the universe, it is life.

Here in the winter holidays, we celebrate life. We celebrate the light of human life, and enlightenment, love, compassion and all that light represents. Light is a symbol integral to life. Light, is in a fundamental way, essential to life. No light, no crops, no food, no life.

Change is just as essential. Ironically, it is the most feared essential thing.

If things are good we fear loosing it. If things are bad, we fear it won't change.

Change, the essential element of the Wheel card is essential to life. If there is no change there is no growth. If things don't decay or change, there is no room for the new.

Change is hope. Change is a new start when we need it. Change can be for the better.

The Wheel card, though, captures one very comforting element of change. It can happen in different increments.

At the axel of a wheel, it changes little at all, change is the wheel hub around the axel. At the hub, and spokes near the hub, the arc of movement is smaller than at the rim, where the circumference is largest.

This gives us a model to deal with change with courage.

Keep the treasures on the inside. Through tradition, memory, love, priorities, appreciation - we can keep the times and people we treasure most with us, closest to heart.

The things that need changed, that need refreshment, renewal can me moved to the rim, for the biggest trip around the wheel: the most change.

It's all relative. From any point of view, a spinning wheel is always half moving up and half moving down. Whether a certain change is good or bad depends on which direction you are watching the wheel at a given moment.

In this time of tradition, may your circle of friends, family and loved ones be near. In this time of tradition may the hub or your wheel be strong, with all the mud and negativity thrown off as we spin toward the new year.

The Star - major arcana

Hope and compassion are ever-present, as the stars, even on a cloudy winter solstice night.

We may not see them but they are there. When the time is right, when the clouds part, then we are able to see, and even the smallest star can light the way. As the stars have a capacity to shine, so we have the capacity for love and hope. It is the nature of the universe for it to be so.

If you could hitch your life to a star, which would it be? Beliefs are your connection to the universe, your star-hitch so to speak. Think of your spiritual beliefs. Which of them pull you to toward compassion and happiness? Do any pull you to fear, anger or judgment? Which beliefs help you now, and which are outdated? Should there be a change at all? What star-connections and beliefs should be strengthened and which should be severed, do you think?

9 OF WANDS daily tarot reading

The 9 of wands has to do with acceptance...accept yourself and your circumstances as they are.

But that is not to mean that you give up hope of change, or stop acting on behalf of things you believe in...most of all not to give up on your own growth and learning.

Acceptance is a very different thing than hopeless resignation...

It is a warriors card. It is a card of acceptance, yes, but this implies realism and pragmatism, not hopelessness. It implies practicality, not resignation.

This card reminds us to play the cards we are dealt. It says nothing about giving up on the game.
