A person's choice of advisers and role models is very telling. It is a classic mental exercise: If you could go to a dinner party with any group of people, living or deceased, who are not your family, who would be on the guest list? What can you learn from them? What can you learn from this exercise?
The best thing is, you can learn from the party guests by way of their work, books by them and books about them.
